Orioles and Athletics lineups, Blewett activated
The Orioles have a chance today to win three series in a row for the first time since June 26-July 7, 2024.
Coby Mayo is the designated hitter and Emmanuel Rivera is playing first base. Ryan O’Hearn goes to the bench.
Ramón Laureano is the right fielder and cleanup hitter. Dylan Carlson remains in left field, with Colton Cowser in center.
Cowser hit a 455-foot home run last night, the longest of his career and longest by an Oriole since Ryan Mountcastle’s 472-foot shot in 2023.
Ten of Laureano’s last 12 home runs have been off right-handed pitchers, with another one last night. He’s batting .375 (18-for-48) in the past 14 games.
Gunnar Henderson is 23-for-65 (.354) in 17 career games against the Athletics.
Jackson Holliday has reached base in a career-high 11 consecutive games.
Adley Rutschman had a .357 slugging percentage on off-speed pitches before May, but that mark has improved to .615 since the beginning of last month, according to STATS.
O’Hearn has a 90.6 percent contact rate on fastballs this season to rank sixth in the American League in a minimum 150 swings, per STATS.
Tomoyuki Sugano is making his 13th start. He’s posted a 3.04 ERA and 1.042 WHIP in 71 innings.
The Orioles have won seven of their last eight games and 10 of 13, and they’re 4-1 on the West Coast trip. The bullpen is a major factor on the trip with 18 scoreless innings and 29 strikeouts.
The overall 20-inning scoreless stretch is the longest by Orioles relievers since Sept. 22-Oct.1, 2016.
“They’ve been really good,” interim manager Tony Mansolino told the media afterward. “I feel like guys are settling in right now. It’s June, we’ve been here a little bit. I think they kind of understand what their roles are.”
Matt Bowman tossed 2 1/3 scoreless and hitless innings last night, but he was designated for assignment today to make room for reliever Scott Blewett.
Blewett is rejoining the Orioles after they selected him on waivers from the Twins on April 14 and he allowed an unearned run in 4 1/3 innings. They traded him to the Braves six days later in a cash transaction, and he didn’t permit an earned run in eight of his 11 appearances.
The last outing contributed to a major meltdown for the Braves, when he allowed five runs in 1 1/3 innings on Thursday. He was dealt to the Orioles on Friday for cash considerations to make room for Craig Kimbrel, who tossed a scoreless inning in his only appearance and was designated for assignment.
The Orioles are hitting .364 when ahead in the count, second best in the majors behind Arizona’s .380 average.
Athletics left-hander Jacob Lopez has a 7.20 ERA and 1.750 WHIP in seven games, including three starts. He’s averaging 4.5 walks and 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings.
In Lopez’s last start on May 29, he surrendered seven runs in 1 2/3 innings in Toronto. He faced the Twins in relief on Tuesday and allowed five runs with nine strikeouts in 4 1/3.
Lopez has never faced the Orioles, who are 4-12 against left-handed starters this season.
The A’s acquired former Orioles catcher Austin Wynns from the Reds today for cash considerations. Wynns had six hits and six RBIs in the Reds’ 24-2 win over the Orioles on April 20 at Camden Yards.
The A’s are 3-21 in their last 24 games.

Triple-A Norfolk catcher Samuel Basallo hit his 13th homer today, a three-run shot in Louisville in Game 1 of a doubleheader. He also singled.
Tyler O’Neill, Jordan Westburg and Gary Sánchez each had two hits. Westburg is expected to be reinstated from the injured list on Tuesday.
Mansolino told the media in Sacramento that Cedric Mullins took live batting practice today against Brandon Young at High-A Aberdeen and he could return during the upcoming homestand.
Chayce McDermott was charged with five runs and five hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings in Louisville. Cionel Pérez replaced him and let an inherited runner score. He also allowed a run of his own with one hit, two walks and a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning.
