Orioles announce spring training non-roster invites (plus note on Garcia in WBC)

The Orioles are inviting 30 non-roster players to spring training, led by right-hander Trey Gibson, the No. 3 prospect in the system according to Baseball America’s rankings. Gibson was chosen as the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

Also on the list is left-hander Luis De León, the No. 5 prospect, and outfielder Enrique Bradfield Jr. (No. 8).

Thirty players received invites, four more than last year’s initial list.

Suárez signed a minor league contract after the Orioles non-tendered him in November. He was one of the most valuable players on the 2024 team after returning to the majors for the first time since 2017 and posting a 3.70 ERA in 32 games, including 24 starts. However, he sustained a shoulder injury during his first appearance this year on March 28 in Toronto and didn’t return until rosters expanded in September. He pitched in four games and was shut down with a mild forearm flexor strain.

Estrada is the No. 11 prospect in the system per Baseball America, German is 13th, Wells is 14th and Anderson is 24th.

The Orioles claimed Noel on waivers from the Guardians on Jan. 5 and designated him for assignment two days later. He hit 13 home runs and posted a .774 OPS in 67 games in 2024, but he batted .162 with six homers and a .480 OPS in 69 games last season.

Vázquez appeared in 32 games with the Orioles last season and could compete for a utility job if there’s room on the roster. Noda appeared in seven. Handley was one of seven catchers to play for the Orioles in 2025.

Among the ranked prospects who are headed to the minor league complex are outfielder Nate George (No. 4), the organization’s Minor League Player of the Year, catcher/outfielder Ike Irish (No. 6), the team’s first draft pick last summer, pitcher Esteban Mejia (No. 7), shortstop Wehiwa Aloy (No. 9), pitcher Braxton Bragg (No. 10), pitcher Boston Bateman (No. 12) and pitcher Juaron Watts-Brown (No. 15).

Bragg underwent Tommy John surgery in July.

The top two prospects, catcher Samuel Basallo and outfielder Dylan Beavers, made their major league debuts a day apart in August.

The first full-squad workout is Feb 16, and the first exhibition game is Feb. 20 against the Yankees in Sarasota.

Notes: Orioles reliever Rico Garcia will pitch for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, according to an industry source.

Garcia made the preliminary roster in December, but his selection became official this week.

Shortstop Gunnar Henderson (Team USA) and pitcher Dean Kremer (Team Israel) also will participate in the WBC.

* Baseball America has ranked the Orioles’ farm system No. 11, a five-spot drop from mid-December. But the publication noted how they used “three of their high-bonus 2025 draftees to the Rays to bring back Shane Baz, using the farm system to improve the big league club.”
