NEW YORK – Jackson Holliday and Samuel Basallo return to the lineup tonight, as the Orioles begin their final 2025 series against the Yankees.
Basallo is serving as designated hitter after being hit on the right wrist by a fastball over the weekend. Holliday, leading off as usual, has been nursing a sore knee.
Dylan Beavers is in left field and Tyler O’Neill is in right. Coby Mayo is the first baseman.
Adley Rutschman has a .421 career on-base percentage against the Yankees, second-highest in club history with a minimum 150 plate appearances, per STATS.
Gunnar Henderson needs one more stolen base to become the youngest Oriole to swipe 30 bags in a season.
Henderson and Holliday are the fifth shortstop/second base duo under 25 years old to each reach base safely 200 or more times in the same year, based on age at end of season and primary position, also according to STATS.
Left-hander Trevor Rogers will make his 18th start. He’s 9-2 with a 1.35 ERA and 0.872 WHIP in 106 2/3 innings and has surrendered only three home runs. His 6.0 bWAR leads the club.
In his last start, Rogers shut out the Yankees on one hit over six innings at Camden Yards. He’s allowed two runs or fewer in 16 of his outings.
The Yankees have struggled against Rogers, scoring two runs in 12 2/3 innings in his three starts. He tossed three scoreless innings in his only appearance at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 26, 2020.
Since ERA became official in both leagues in 1913, the only pitcher with an ERA under 1.50 and a .800 winning percentage in a season was Walter Johnson in 1913, per STATS. Johnson, however, was 36-7 with a 1.14 ERA in 1913.
Rogers could become the first pitcher with 100 innings as a starter and an ERA below 1.50 since Bob Gibson (1.12) in 1968.
The Orioles are 13-4 in Rogers’ starts. Their best winning percentage in a season by a pitcher with a minimum 15 starts came from Steve Stone (29-8, .784) in 1980, per STATS.
The Orioles haven’t scored more than five runs in any of their 13 games against the Yankees this season. They’ve gone an entire season twice without tallying at least six runs, in 1961 and 1985.
Yesterday marked the ninth time that the Orioles ended the home schedule with a walk-off win, joining Sept. 28, 2011 vs. Boston (Robert Andino single), Oct. 4, 2009 vs. Toronto (Michael Aubrey single), Oct. 3, 1990 vs. Toronto (Mickey Tettleton home run), Sept. 29, 1974 vs. Milwaukee (Boog Powell walk), Oct. 1, 1970 vs. Washington (Davey Johnson single), Oct.1, 1969 vs. Detroit (Mark Belanger single), Oct. 3, 1964 vs. Detroit (Sam Bowens walk), and Sept. 30, 1961 vs. White Sox (Barry Shetrone single.)
Right-hander Will Warren has posted a 4.35 ERA in 32 starts. He allowed one earned run and three total in 5 1/3 innings against the Orioles last Friday, two runs in 6 1/3 innings on June 22, and four runs in 3 1/3 innings on April 28.
Colton Cowser is 2-for-5 with two doubles against Warren, and Henderson is 2-for-4 with a double.
The Orioles are 4-6 against the Yankees this season, including 1-2 on the road.
This is a big series for New York, which is tied with the Blue Jays for first place in the division. The Yankees have won five in a row and eight of nine.
