The Yankees announced that manager Joe Girardi’s father, Jerry, passed away Saturday at age 81. Girardi didn’t make the news public.

According to Baseball America’s Matt Eddy, Double-A Bowie outfielder Jai Miller elected to become a free agent. The Orioles acquired Miller from the Athletics on Jan. 3 for cash considerations.

Since 1954, the Orioles have the lowest postseason ERA in baseball at 2.69 over 747 1/3 innings. Their starters have a 1.82 ERA in four playoff games this year, the second-lowest total behind the Tigers’ 1.75.

Miguel Gonzalez held the Yankees to one run over seven innings last night. According to Elias, he’s the first rookie to allow one run or fewer over seven innings in a postseason game against the Yankees since Joe Black of the 1952 Brooklyn Dodgers.

According to ESPN Stats, Gonzalez and Cliff Lee (Oct. 28, 2009) are the only pitchers since 1950 to strike out eight or more and not walk a batter in a playoff road game against the Yankees. Gonzalez’s eight strikeouts were the second-most by a rookie pitcher against the Yankees behind Don Newcombe’s 11 in Game 1 of the 1949 World Series.
