Johnson has agreed to a $6.5 million deal, according to an industry source, that leaves the Orioles with two unsigned arbitration-eligible players – pitchers Jason Hammel and Darren O’Day.
Johnson made $2.625 million last season while leading the majors with 51 saves in 54 opportunities. He filed for $7.1 million and the Orioles countered at $5.7 million.
A hearing date would have been set for later this month if the two sides hadn’t reached agreement.
Hammel requested $8.25 million, while the Orioles offered $5.7 million. O’Day requested $3.2 million, while the Orioles offered $1.8 million.
A source said progress has been made in negotiations with both pitchers, and it’s believed that the Orioles are close to reaching agreements.
The Orioles went to a hearing with Brad Bergesen last winter and won their case. Usually, these matters are resolved beforehand.
The Sun first reported Johnson’s deal.
Update: The Orioles also have reached agreement with Hammel, who accepted a $6.75 million deal, according to an industry source.
Hammel can make another $300,000 in incentives.
