Orioles lineup vs. Rays in series finale in Tampa (with O's starters in NY)
The Orioles try for the series split with the Rays tonight after squandering an eight-run lead last night in a 12-8 loss.
Ryan O’Hearn is the first baseman and Jordan Westburg is the designated hitter, which puts Coby Mayo on the bench again.
Colton Cowser is in left field, Cedric Mullins in center and Ramón Laureano inn right. Jackson Holliday stays atop the order.
Laureano hit line drives 13.5 percent of the time in his first 24 games, according to STATS. Over his last 23 games, his line drive percentage has increased to 32.8.
Charlie Morton has a 6.05 ERA and 1.656 WHIP in 16 games (10 starts). He tossed five scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts in his last start against the Angels after allowing four runs and six hits with four walks in 2 1/3 in Sacramento. He began the month with one unearned run allowed in 6 2/3 against the White Sox.
Morton has made eight career starts against the Rays and posted a 2.94 ERA and 1.102 WHIP in 49 innings. The current team is a collective 4-for-31 against him. Yandy Díaz is 2-for-6.
The Orioles were 24-13 when scoring first before last night. They’re 6 ½ games back for the last Wild Card and head to New York after tonight’s game to play three against the first-place Yankees.
The Rays matched the largest comeback in franchise history. The Orioles had fumbled an eight-run lead only twice before last night, the last time in 2017 against the Yankees.
“Just baseball did its thing,” Mullins said.
"It’s a tough game," interim manager Tony Mansolino told the assembled media in Tampa after the Orioles allowed 12 unanswered runs. "It hurts. This one really hurts."
Tampa Bay right-hander Drew Rasmussen has a 2.55 ERA and 0.946 WHIP in 14 starts. He built a streak of four consecutive scoreless starts covering 23 innings from May 17-June 3.
Rasmussen has registered a 2.89 ERA and 0.893 WHIP in eight career games (five starts) against the Orioles and carried a perfect game into the ninth inning of an August 2022 start at Tropicana Field. Jorge Mateo broke it up with a leadoff double.
Mullins is 0-for-12 against Rasmussen. Ramón Urías, who’s the third baseman tonight, is 0-for-10.
Rasmussen has held right-handed hitters to a .127 average and .169 slugging percentage in his last seven starts after they batted .241 with a .379 slugging in his first seven starts.
The Rays have won 20 of their last 27 to pull within 1 1/2 games of the Yankees in the American League East.
