The Orioles are going with another outfield alignment tonight while continuing their series against the Red Sox, with Mark Trumbo in right field while Danny Valencia serves as the designated hitter against left-hander Drew Pomeranz.
Trey Mancini is in left field. Chris Davis is batting seventh as the first baseman.
Renato Núñez continues to play third base.
Yefry RamÃrez is making his fifth major league start and sixth appearance as he bids to stay in the rotation. He’s 0-3 with a 3.09 ERA and 1.200 WHIP in 23 1/3 innings, and he’s averaging 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
RamÃrez hasn’t exceeded five innings in any of his appearances, but he blanked the Rangers on two hits through the fifth in his last outing before the break. He threw 94 pitches before coming out of the game.
Facing the Red Sox in his major league debut on June 13, RamÃrez allowed three runs and four hits and struck out six batters in 4 1/3 innings in a 5-1 loss. Mookie Betts homered off him.
Right-handers are hitting .191 against RamÃrez and left-handers are hitting .263.
Left-hander Drew Pomeranz has gone 1-3 with a 6.81 ERA and 1.838 WHIP in eight starts over 37 innings. He’s averaging 5.1 walks per nine innings.
The Orioles scored four earned runs and five total off Pomeranz over four innings on May 18 at Fenway Park. He allowed seven hits and walked three batters.
Pomeranz is 2-4 with a 4.01 ERA and 1.307 WHIP in nine career games (six starts) versus the Orioles, and he’s allowed three runs in 15 innings at Camden Yards.
Trumbo is 2-for-14 lifetime against Pomeranz. Jonathan Schoop is 3-for-14.
Schoop is hitting .360 (27-for-75) in 19 games this month.
Mancini’s already having a good day. A scoring change from Sunday’s game, when two Toronto infielders collided, has given him a hit and an RBI.
The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association has chosen center fielder Adam Jones as the Orioles’ recipient of the Heart and Hustle Award for the sixth time.
The award honors active players who demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit and traditions of the game. It’s also the only award that is voted on by former players.
“Adam has consistently played the game at a high level, year after year,” said former Orioles infielder and current MASN analyst Mike Bordick. “He always shows his passion for the game and his love of the Baltimore community.”
The final winner will be announced on Nov. 8, 2018 at the 19th Annual Legends for Youth Dinner in New York City.
