Orioles select Dylan Beavers' contract

One wait is over.

The Orioles are selecting outfielder Dylan Beavers’ contract from Triple-A Norfolk, one day after the date to retain his rookie eligibility for 2026.

Outfielder Greg Allen was designated for assignment to create room. Beavers will wear No. 12 and he could be in tonight’s lineup against Astros right-hander Jason Alexander.

Beavers could have bloodied his knuckles from the hard knocks on the major league door.

The 33rd-overall draft pick in 2022 is batting .304/.420/.515 with 14 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs, 51 RBIs, 68 walks, 746strikeouts and 23 stolen bases in 94 games in his fourth professional season. He was the designated hitter last night in Jacksonville.

The outfield is wide open for Beavers after the Orioles traded Cedric Mullins, Ramón Laureano and part-timer Ryan O’Hearn, and put Colton Cowser on the seven-day concussion list and Tyler O’Neill on the 10-day injured list.

Cowser was eligible to return Thursday but is a “little bit sorer than we probably anticipated,” said interim manager Tony Mansolino, who added yesterday that Cowser should be reinstated Sunday.

“I don’t see it being too long. Still going through concussion protocol. But I think in the near future we’ll see him here in a major league game.”

O’Neill is expected to remain on the IL until at least early September.

“The longer it goes,” Mansolino said, “the more likely we’ll have to send him out to get a couple at-bats before he plays in a big league game.”

Baseball America came out with its latest Top 100 rankings and Beavers made his first appearance at No. 83. The Orioles can net an extra draft pick if a player in at least two Top 100 lists wins American League Rookie of the Year. The other outlets are MLB Pipeline and ESPN.

MLB Pipeline ranks Beavers third in the organization between 2025 first-round pick Ike Irish and Enrique Bradfield Jr.

Catcher Samuel Basallo, who just turned 21, remains with Norfolk despite batting .270/.377/.589 with 17 doubles, 23 home runs and 67 RBIs in 76 games. MLB Pipeline ranks him No. 1 in the organization and No. 8 in baseball. Baseball America puts him No. 7 overall.

The Orioles could delay Basallo’s arrival until rosters expand Sept. 1. They figured to go slower with Basallo than with Beavers because his position is more demanding. But if Beavers was knocking on the door, Basallo’s put his fist through it.

Beavers can become the 61st player used by the Orioles one short of the franchise record in 2021.
