Orioles try to even series with Athletics (lineups and notes)

The Orioles had their winning streak snapped at six games late last night with a 5-4 loss to the Athletics in Sacramento. They went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10.

Interim manager Tony Mansolino used four relievers to cover 2 2/3 scoreless innings, but the bullpen is unchanged again after the Orioles acquired Scott Blewett from the Braves yesterday for cash considerations. Blewett hadn’t reported yesterday and the club didn’t announce a roster move today.

Maverick Handley is catching tonight and Adley Rutschman is the designated hitter. Ryan O’Hearn is playing first base and Ramón Urías is at third, which puts Coby Mayo on the bench after he doubled and walked last night.

Dylan Carlson is the left fielder again and Ramón Laureano is in right. Heston Kjerstad isn’t in the lineup.

Carlson homered as a right-handed hitter last night for the second time in his last 93 games since June 21, 2023.

Jackson Holliday has tied a career high by reaching base in 10 straight games since May 26. He had three hits last night, including a left-on-left home run.

Charlie Morton has allowed two earned runs in his last two starts over 12 2/3 innings and four earned runs in his last five appearances over 22. He’s made eight career starts against the Athletics and posted a 2.58 ERA in 45 1/3 innings.

Left-handers had an 18.0 percent walk rate against Morton in his first nine games this season, but that number has dropped to 4.4 percent over his last five, per STATS.

Sutter Health Park will be the 35th different ballpark that Morton has started in, tying him with the Brewers’ Jose Quintana for the most among active pitchers.

The Orioles have drawn at least one walk in 140 straight games since July 2, 2024, the longest active streak in the majors and the second-longest in franchise history behind a 155-game stretch from June 23, 1955-June 24, 1956.

The Athletics are sending right-hander Luis Severino to the mound. He’s registered a 4.54 ERA in 13 starts and has allowed four home runs in 77 1/3 innings. An opponent hasn’t homered off him since April 7.

The 10-start, 58 1/3-inning, 252-batter homerless streak is the longest of his career.

Severino had a stretch in May when he allowed three earned runs in three starts totaling 18 innings, but he faced the Twins last week and surrendered eight runs and nine hits in 5 2/3.

Pitching in Sacramento doesn’t seem to be working for Severino, who has a 6.99 ERA at home and a 0.87 ERA on the road. His home ERA is the highest in the majors among qualified pitchers.

Severino is 7-3 with a 5.17 ERA and 1.163 WHIP in 14 career games (12 starts) against the Orioles. Gunnar Henderson, who wasn’t in last night’s lineup, is 5-for-6 with a double and home run against him. O’Hearn is 4-for-5 with two doubles. Laureano is 3-for-7 with a double.

The A’s have won back-to-back games for the first time since May 4-5. Their starting pitchers have earned a win in back-to-back games for the first time since May 1-2.

Double-A Chesapeake right-hander Braxton Bragg will miss today’s start with mild forearm discomfort, per the Orioles.

Bragg didn’t allow an earned run in 16 1/3 innings with High-A Aberdeen and he registered a 1.82 ERA in seven games (six starts) with Chesapeake totaling 34 2/3 innings. He’s averaging a combined 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings and he’s surrendered only one home run.

MLB Pipeline ranks him as the No. 15 prospect in the system and Baseball America places him ninth.

Tyler O’Neill finally began his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk. The Tides were rained out last night in Louisville and have a doubleheader today, with Trevor Rogers and Chayce McDermott starting.

O’Neill went 0-for-3, but Jordan Westburg homered and doubled within the first three innings in Game 1. Rogers allowed two runs – both in the seventh inning - and 11 hits in 6 2/3, with no walks and five strikeouts.

Vance Honeycutt, last year’s first-round draft pick and the No. 4 prospect in the system, returns to Aberdeen’s lineup tonight after being scratched Wednesday with left hip flexor tightness.
