The Orioles are prepared to make another roster move this afternoon, recalling right-hander Logan Ondrusek from Double-A Bowie to provide a fresh arm for the bullpen.
Parker Bridwell will be optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after making his first two major league appearances.
Ondrusek appeared in six games with the Orioles and allowed four runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. They optioned him to Bowie on Aug. 11 and gave him time to regain the feel for his splitter. They also expected him to be more effective against left-handers.
Ondrusek is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three games with the Baysox. He’s allowed three earned runs (four total) and six hits in four innings.
In his most recent outing, Ondrusek threw two scoreless innings on Tuesday and is available out of the bullpen tonight at Nationals Park.
The Orioles signed Ondrusek as a free agent on July 29 and designated Chaz Roe for assignment. The Braves claimed Roe off waivers.
Left-hander T.J. McFarland was a consideration, but he remains on his injury rehab assignment. Joe Gunkel is starting today at Triple-A Norfolk, which used outfielder L.J. Hoes in relief last night in the 13th inning. He was credited with the win.
Showalter enjoys having more flexibility in his bullpen these days, with optionable relievers who can be swapped out.
Bridwell retired the Nats in order last night in the eighth inning, but surrendered a grand slam to Daniel Murphy in the ninth. He threw 35 pitches and wasn’t going to be available for a few days.
Bridwell allowed five runs and five hits and struck out three batters in 3 1/3 innings in his two appearances. He made his major league debut Sunday against the Astros.
