Kevin Gausman will start Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader against the Yankees, followed by Bud Norris in Game 2. Miguel Gonzalez will start Saturday afternoon and Chris Tillman will pitch Sunday night on ESPN.
Wei-Yin Chen, who closes out the Red Sox series at Fenway Park, will start Monday night against the Blue Jays.
Norris is 2-4 with a 5.75 ERA in seven day starts this season and 10-4 with a 3.32 ERA in 18 night starts. It made sense to give him the ball in Game 2.
Showalter hasn’t decided on a Tuesday starter, but he won’t use anyone on short rest. The candidates include T.J. McFarland, Joe Saunders and Ubaldo Jimenez from the bullpen and Mike Wright and Tyler Wilson from the taxi squad in Sarasota.
McFarland is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in nine career appearances against the Blue Jays. Saunders is 3-6 with a 4.18 ERA in 10 starts, and Jimenez is 2-3 with a 4.89 ERA in seven starts.
McFarland’s only start this season came on July 1 against the Rangers and he earned the win after allowing two runs and seven hits in five innings.
Saunders hasn’t started in the majors since facing the Orioles on June 30 while pitching for the Rangers. He allowed seven runs and nine hits in five innings. The left-hander served up four home runs, including two to Steve Pearce.
Jimenez hasn’t started since allowing six runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings in Cleveland. He’s made two relief appearances since moving to the bullpen, his most recent appearance coming Aug. 31 against the Twins, when he was charged with three runs in one-third of an inning.
Wright and Wilson would be long shots to receive a promotion, but Showalter included them on the list of candidates. Wilson was just named the organization’s minor league Pitcher of the Year after Wright won it in 2013.
Showalter must decide between Gausman and Norris for Wednesday’s game against the Blue Jays.
