Susana has lat surgery, Gray to make final rehab start Friday, Williams is Clemente nominee
Jarlin Susana had surgery last week to repair his right lat muscle, a procedure that could impact the top pitching prospect’s availability for Nationals spring training.
Susana, the organization’s third-rated prospect behind shortstop Eli Willits and fellow right-hander Travis Sykora, injured himself during an Aug. 30 start for Double-A Harrisburg, departing after allowing three runs on one hit, three walks and a hit-by-pitch in 1 2/3 innings. A subsequent MRI revealed a lat strain, the Nats announced Sept. 5, though they were still consulting with doctors to determine a course of action.
The final determination was that the strain was significant enough to require surgery, which was performed last week. The Nationals did not offer a timeline for his recovery, but pitchers who need lat surgery typically miss a considerable amount of time.
Mets left-hander AJ Minter had season-ending lat surgery in early May. Brewers right-hander JB Bukauskas has missed the entire season following lat surgery in late February.
According to Major League Baseball’s injury glossary, Grade 1 lat strains are considered mild and require only 2-3 weeks of recovery, Grade 2 strains are considered moderate and require a month of recovery and Game 3 strains are considered severe because the muscle ruptures, requiring surgery with a considerably longer recovery period.
The lat strain, while potentially serious, is still less cause for concern than a major elbow injury, which Susana avoided earlier this season. He missed 2 1/2 months with a Grade 1 sprain of his ulnar collateral ligament, but was able to return with only rest and rehab, not surgery that would’ve sidelined him 12-18 months.
The 21-year-old, whose fastball regularly surpasses 100 mph, finished his season 1-4 with a 3.51 ERA in 14 combined starts between Single-A Wilmington and Double-A Harrisburg, striking out 95 batters in only 56 1/3 innings.
* Josiah Gray will make his next (and final) rehab start Friday for Triple-A Rochester after emerging from his first two appearances healthy.
Gray, in the final stages of recovery from July 2024 Tommy John surgery and an internal brace procedure, threw 34 pitches over 1 1/3 scoreless innings Sept. 7 for Wilmington, then 32 pitches over 1 2/3 scoreless innings Saturday for Harrisburg.
With only one week remaining in the minor league season, and only the Triple-A level still playing, Gray will ramp up to three innings or 45 pitches Friday for Rochester, which is playing on the road at Worcester.
The Nationals have not ruled out the possibility of activating Gray off the 60-day IL to have him make one big league appearance during the season’s final week, but club officials also don’t feel it’s necessary for the 27-year-old before heading into the winter.
* Trevor Williams was named the Nationals’ nominee for this year’s Roberto Clemente Award.
The veteran right-hander, who underwent a season-ending internal brace procedure in July to repair his elbow sprain, is being recognized for his continuous work with Project 34, which aims to improve the lives of spinal cord injury survivors and caregivers by giving financial relief to families, as well as his support of the Nationals’ military initiatives.
Williams, who is being honored before tonight’s game at Nationals Park, will compete with nominees from all 29 other clubs for this year’s Clemente Award, which will be presented during the World Series.
