MILWAUKEE – Ramón Urías will watch his younger brother tonight from the visiting dugout. He can wave toward the home side.
Urías started at third base last night, with Luis playing second for the Brewers. Ramón isn’t in the lineup while mired in a 2-for-25 slump. Luis also is sitting.
The brothers hadn’t played in the same major league game before, creating a unique experience for the family.
“It was a special moment,” Ramón said this afternoon. “We were looking forward to this game, and it was an exciting moment to be on the field.”
One that they dreamed about growing up in Mexico.
“Yes,” Ramón said, “but you don’t really know if you’re going to have the opportunity in the big leagues.”
They usually speak three times a week during the season. The series allows them to skip the phone calls.
“We are very close,” Ramón said.
Ramón won a Gold Glove at third base last year, but Luis made a couple of impressive plays last night at second, including a diving stop to rob Aaron Hicks of a hit.
“I know he’s good in the field,” Ramón said.
The game also provided some light-hearted moments, like the reaction from the Orioles’ bench when Kyle Gibson nailed Luis with a pitch.
“Inside I was laughing,” Ramón said. “My teammates were saying, ‘Hey, did you send Gibson to hit him?’”
The brothers contacted their parents after Milwaukee’s 10-inning win. Ramón went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. Luis was 0-for-3 with a walk, hit by pitch and two strikeouts.
“We had a tough night out there,” Ramón said, “but still, they were happy to see us on the field.”
Ramón is scuffling since the Orioles reinstated him from the injured list. He struck out four times last night and his slash line has dipped from .278/.375/.381 on May 8 to .238/.326/.336.
“Of course, I’ve been having a bad time at the plate, but working on it,” he said. “I think timing-wise is a little bad right now, but I’m going to keep working on it. Sometimes, you get it right away, sometimes it’s just a little bit harder. But keep grinding, keep trusting yourself and keep working.”
Ramón is recovering from a strained hamstring. Luis played on Opening Day, strained his hamstring – the brothers really are close – and missed more than two months before returning on Monday.
“We stay positive with each other, knowing that it’s part of the game,” Ramón said. “We’ll be (there) for each other.”
Manager Brandon Hyde also noted how Urías’ timing is off, perhaps from the inactivity while injured.
“He came off the bench in San Francisco against a left-hander and smoked one up the middle, didn’t get a hit out of it, but it was a good swing. I thought that was encouraging,” Hyde said.
“Had a tough night last night.”
Ryan Mountcastle also is out of the lineup, and it isn’t due to a physical ailment.
“He’s searching a little bit at the plate right now,” Hyde said. “Him and Ramón, just kind of going through typical baseball things. I wanted him to have a nice work day. They both put a lot of cage time in, and maybe give them a little bit of a mental night off. But there’s a really good chance you’ll see both of those guys in the game at some point.
“We need both of these guys to be big parts of our lineup and I’m hoping that they get a little reset today. It’s a long season, a lot of season left.”
