An expected announcement, but still a tough day on the farm
It was not exactly a secret that there would not be Minor League Baseball in 2020. But when the news became official on Tuesday afternoon, it was not any easier to take. The minors are hurting and it's a brutal time for owners, staff, players and fans on the farm. With all those teams, all those locations and all those players, there was going to be no way to safely play in the minors this summer. Some players will find their way onto a club's 60-man player pool; for some, maybe their chance...

Bowie skipper talks Austin Hays, plus other notes

Bowie skipper talks Austin Hays, plus other notes
BOWIE, Md. - Orioles minor league outfielder Austin Hays turned 22 yesterday. He will probably remember being 21 rather fondly. In just over a 12-month span, he has been drafted in the third round by the Orioles out of Jacksonville University, hit .336 at short season Single-A Aberdeen, hit .328 at Single-A Frederick and now is batting .339 at Double-A Bowie. Isn't it supposed to get harder as you go up? Hays was recently named the organization's Player of the Month for June, batting .373...

A look at the Orioles' minor league spring training roster and schedule

A look at the Orioles' minor league spring training roster and schedule
Here is the lengthy list of players who will be reporting to the Orioles' minor league spring training camp later this week in Sarasota, Fla. Pitchers and catchers report this Friday, March 4, while the position players report date is Tuesday, March 8 at the Buck O'Neil Complex at Twin Lakes Park. Just like at major league camp, many players are already at this camp, well ahead of the reporting dates. These players will join a group of 37 players who reported to an early camp over a week ago....

A look at the Orioles' minor league early camp roster

A look at the Orioles' minor league early camp roster
About nine days before Orioles minor league pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training, a group of 37 players will report for an early camp in Sarasota, Fla. The list includes 18 pitchers, four catchers, nine infielders and six outfielders. They'll report to the O's Twin Lakes complex starting next Tuesday, Feb. 23. This will give this group of players an earlier start to their season and some of these players could be used by the Orioles in early exhibition games that...

The Orioles have named their minor league managers and coaching staffs for the 2016 season. Ron Johnson returns for his fifth season as manager at Triple-A Norfolk after guiding the Tides to the International League South Division title and earning Manager of the Year honors in 2015. The 2016 season will be Johnson's 23rd as a minor league manager. He has compiled 1,555 career victories (1,555-1,544 overall) and became the winningest manager in Tides franchise history last season, going...

An opinion from Baseball America

An opinion from Baseball America
Yesterday, we began our series of stories around this All-Star break on the Orioles minor league system and how well - or not - it is performing. After getting Andy MacPhail's take, today we solicit an outside and independent, but very well informed, opinion. I interviewed Baseball America's Will Lingo, who has followed the O's minors closely for years and who puts together the publication's Orioles top prospects list every year. How are the O's doing on the farm right now at the...

Ranking the Orioles

Ranking the Orioles
Earlier today, I presented comments from Baseball America's Will Lingo on the O's farm system. Lingo and Baseball America ranked the O's farm in the top third of baseball earlier this year. "We rated them ninth coming into the season in our Prospect Handbook. For our midseason update, I wouldn't say they are one of the top organizations right now, but I would say they are in the middle of the pack," Lingo said. But if the O's were ninth then and now are in the middle of the pack, are...

Is winning important at the minor league level?

Is winning important at the minor league level?
So how important is winning at the minor league level? You will likely get a similar answer from most people on this question. They say winning is nice, but not if it gets in the way of developing Major League players. Here is Andy MacPhail's take on this topic: "It's preferable but not at the expense of developing players. In other words, you are not going to play a 27-year-old third base filler at A ball if he's standing in the way of a 20-year-old that you think potentially one day...
