BRADENTON, Fla. – Wade Miley left today’s game against the Pirates after being hit by an Elias DÃaz line drive leading off the bottom of the second inning.
Miley ran the count full to DÃaz and was drilled, the ball appearing to hit his arm or shoulder area. There are no video replays available in the LECOM Park press box.
Head athletic trainer Richie Bancells, manager Buck Showalter and pitching coach Roger McDowell came out of the dugout. Miley walked to the bench and then headed to the clubhouse with Bancells.
Miley was holding his glove in his right hand and swinging both arms as he walked, for what that’s worth. We’re waiting for the Orioles to provide an update.
The day couldn’t have gone much worse for Miley, making his second exhibition start. He threw 31 pitches in the first inning and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk.
The Pirates loaded the bases with no outs on Starling Marté’s single, Phil Gosselin’s bunt hit and Gregory Polanco’s walk. Catcher Welington Castillo fielded David Freese’s tapper near the plate, spun and threw the ball past first baseman Trey Mancini.
Freese was credit with a hit and RBI, and the second run scored on E-2.
John Jaso struck out, but Kevin Newman lined an RBI single into left field. Former Orioles farmhand Joey Terdoslavich grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Miley threw six pitches to DÃaz, running his game count to 37. Twenty-two were strikes.
Minor leaguer David Hess began warming up in the first inning and he replaced Miley in the second.
The Orioles are down 3-0 after wasting Hyun Soo Kim’s leadoff single and Joey Rickard’s walk in the first inning and Johnny Giavotella’s one-out double in the second.
