The Orioles’ pitching schedule will be affected if we have a cancellation. Otherwise, Jake Arrieta and Zach Britton will start the split-squad games on Wednesday and Jair Jurrjens will start Thursday against the Minnesota Twins in Fort Myers.
Tommy Hunter is slated to go two or three innings on Thursday. Kevin Gausman will pitch two innings.
Jason Hammel will make his 2013 Grapefruit League debut on Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Sarasota. Wei-Yin Chen will make his debut Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays in Port Charlotte, with Brian Matusz following him to the mound. Chris Tillman will start Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies in Sarasota, with Miguel Gonzalez making his debut in relief.
The Orioles are off Monday. Jurrjens will start again on March 5 against the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin.
Steve Johnson is scheduled to pitch two innings today if the rain allows it.
Relievers Darren O’Day and Jim Johnson will make their debuts on March 6 against Spain.
Also, reliever Luis Ayala isn’t scheduled to pitch through Thursday and he may not make an appearance before March 10. He’s been dealing with flu-like symptoms, but the main reason for the delay is the need to rest him following winter league play and the Caribbean Series.
Tsuyoshi Wada felt good today and will throw off a regular mound again on Wednesday.
Update: Today’s game between the Orioles and Pirates has been rained out. It won’t be made up at a later date.
Manager Buck Showalter inspected the outfield shortly before the announcement. He wasn’t going to risk injury to his players.
It’s possible that today’s pitchers will throw indoors back in Sarasota, which would allow Showalter to keep everyone else on their normal schedules.
Update II: Chris Tillman will start Wednesday night’s split-squad game against the Boston Red Sox in Saraosta.
Zach Britton was supposed to start against the Red Sox. He could work in relief or be pushed back. The Orioles will reveal their plans later.
