Machín outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk, notes before Orioles-Giants game (and lineup)

SAN FRANCISCO – Orioles infielder Vimael Machín is staying in the organization.

Machín cleared outright waivers today and accepted an assignment to Triple-A Norfolk.

The Orioles designated Machín for assignment on Wednesday and selected Emmanuel Rivera’s contract from Norfolk.

Machín went 1-for-11 with a home run in his first major league action since 2022. He’s hitting .285/.344/.470 with 25 doubles, two triples, 15 home runs and 70 RBIs in 107 games with the Tides.

Reliever Matt Bowman was designated for assignment on Tuesday and reliever Roansy Contreras yesterday. The club hasn't announced the outcome of those transactions.

The Orioles are on the West Coast for three games in San Francisco and three in San Diego. They went 1-7 on the last homestand and have lost back-to-back series after winning three in a row for the first time this season.

Dean Kremer is 9-9 with a 4.19 ERA in 26 games. He allowed six earned runs and seven total over five innings to the Astros in his last start. In the previous two, he surrendered one run over 15 innings.

Kremer has faced the Giants twice in his career and allowed six earned runs (seven total) in 12 innings. He had a quality start at Oracle Park with two runs in six innings on June 2, 2023.

Rafael Devers is 7-for-23 with a double and two home runs against Kremer from his Red Sox days. Matt Chapman is 2-for-17 with a homer. Willy Adames is 4-for-9 with a double and home run.

San Francisco earned its 10th walk-off win yesterday against the Cubs, tying the Red Sox and Brewers for most in the majors. The Giants have won five games in a row after losing four straight and are two below .500.

The Orioles won two of three games in San Francisco in 2023 and 2016. They were behind 7-1 on Aug. 14, 2016 and rallied with two runs in the seventh and eighth and three in the ninth for an 8-7 victory.

The Orioles have won four of their five road series in San Francisco, and their  4-1-0 series record is tied with Kansas City (also 4-1) for best in the majors, per STATS.

Tonight’s game airs exclusively on Apple TV+.

* The Orioles announced the return of the 38th annual Food & Funds Drive next weekend, when they’re hosting the Dodgers for three games. The collection will again benefit the Maryland Food Bank.

Fans attending the series are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items and monetary donations. Volunteers from the Orioles, Maryland Food Bank, AAA Club Alliance Inc. and Giant Food will be stationed outside the ballpark from the time gates open through the top of the second inning to collect donations. Giant Food will match all monetary donations up to $10,000.

“The Maryland Food Bank plays a vital role in communities throughout Birdland,” Kerry Watson, Orioles executive vice president of public affairs, said in a statement. “We look forward to the Food & Funds drive every year because it allows us to work in partnership with our fans to make a difference in the neighborhoods we call home.”

The Maryland Food Bank distributes nearly 120,000 meals daily and 91 percent of all donated resources go directly to neighbor-centered programs. Fans wishing to donate are encouraged to bring some of the most needed items, which include canned proteins, rice and pasta, canned fruits and vegetables, and cooking oil.

The Orioles will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Cal Ripken Jr. breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive games streak on Sept. 6.  The team, AAA, Giant Food and the Maryland Food Bank are challenging fans on that date to raise more than $2,131 and donate more than 2,131 pounds of food.
