McDermott joins Orioles in Milwaukee, tonight's lineup and notes

The Orioles have put pitcher Chayce McDermott on their taxi squad tonight in Milwaukee, which likely makes him Tuesday night’s starter against the Brewers. The spot is listed as TBA.

McDermott was the 27th man in Game 2 of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Twins and allowed four runs in three innings before the Orioles returned him to Triple-A Norfolk. He walked three batters and struck out five.

Being the 27th man allows him to return to the majors without waiting the minimum 15 days.

Jackson Holliday is leading off tonight and Ramón Laureano is the cleanup hitter. Ramón Urías is playing third base, Dylan Carlson is in left field and Maverick Handley is catching.

Adley Ruschman is on the bench.

Ryan Mountcastle, who has a 12-game hitting streak, stays in the second spot in the order.

Holliday has crafted a five-game hitting streak, with multiple hits and a home run in each of his last two games. Per STATS, he joins Gunnar Henderson (2023), Eddie Murray (1977) and Andres Mora (1976) as the only Orioles age 21 or younger to have multiple hits and a homer in back-to-back games. Only Henderson did it in three straight, from June 10-13, 2023.

Dean Kremer allowed two runs in 14 innings over two starts this month before the Twins had four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3. He’s started twice against the Brewers and allowed 12 earned runs (14 total) and 19 hits in nine innings. He gave up six runs in five innings in Milwaukee.

Jake Bauers is 3-for-9 with a double and two home runs.

The Orioles have lost six in a row, 12 of 14 and 19 of 25 to lower their record to 15-30. The six-game skid is the longest since May 13-18, 2022.

The prolonged struggles have left the Orioles 9 ½ games out of a Wild Card spot. The only time they made the playoffs after being at least eight games out of a spot was in 1974, per STATS.

The Orioles have lost their last four series in Milwaukee. The most recent win was in September 1997. Seven current Orioles weren’t born yet – Holliday, Rutschman, Carlson, Handley, Henderson, Heston Kjerstad and Cade Povich.

This is just the fifth time that the Orioles have visited Milwaukee since the Brewers moved to the National League in 1998. They’ve gone 3-9 in Milwaukee during that time.

The Orioles haven’t claimed a series against the Brewers in any location since June 2003.

Brewers right-hander Quinn Priester has made six starts and one relief appearance this year and posted a 4.59 ERA and 1.560 WHIP with 21 walks in 33 1/3 innings. He’s held the Astros and Guardians to one earned run in five innings in his last two starts.

Left-handers have hit .316/.412/.571 in his career, and right-handers have hit .239/.300/.382. However, Rutschman and Kjerstad aren't in tonight's lineup.

This is Priester’s first appearance against the Orioles.

Milwaukee is in fourth place in the National League Central with a 22-25 record, including 13-9 at home. They’ve lost seven of 10.

The Brewers’ 37 home runs are tied for 27th in the majors. Their .648 OPS is 27th. They’re batting .184 this month, the lowest average in the majors. Also ranking last are Milwaukee’s .258 OBP and .278 slugging in May.

The club has been shut out six times this month, most in the majors.

The rotation’s 3.83 ERA this season is 14th.

Former Oriole Joey Ortiz is batting .174 with a .449 OPS in 44 games. Outfielder Daz Cameron also is on the roster.

DL Hall is on the 60-day injured list with a lat strain.
