The two trips that Adley Rutschman made to the injured list last season have been matched already in 2026.
Rutschman went on the seven-day concussion IL this evening, and the Orioles recalled outfielder Michael Siani from Triple-A Norfolk.
Siani joined the team today on the taxi squad, and he was on standby in case Rutschman didn’t get cleared to play. He’s wearing No. 83.
Rutschman was hit on the side of the helmet by Colt Emerson’s throw Thursday night in Seattle while running to first base in the ninth inning. He came out of the game and wasn’t in last night’s lineup at Dodger Stadium.
“It obviously sucks for Adley,” manager Craig Albernaz told the media in Los Angeles. “Especially for concussions and head injuries, it’s tough, and especially the position he plays with the constant foul tips, balls in the dirt, backswings, plays at the plate. We’ll take it day-by-day, see where he’s at.”
Rutschman hadn’t gone on the injured list until the 2025 season, when he strained his left and right obliques. He was sidelined in April with left ankle inflammation.
The first All-Star balloting update had Rutschman in third place among American League catchers. He’s batting .254/.329/.458 with 15 doubles, a triple, eight home runs and 40 RBIs in 54 games, and he’s thrown out 13 of 37 runners attempting to steal.
“It is disappointing for Adley,” Albernaz said. “When an injury like that happens, it’s nothing the team can do. It was such a freak incident.”
The Orioles have 11 players on the injured list.
Samuel Basallo is catching again tonight and Sam Huff is the backup.
Siani, a waiver claim from the Dodgers in May, has appeared in 160 major league games over four seasons and batted .221/.277/.270. He’s a plus defender and runner who can play anywhere in the outfield.
Siani was on the taxi squad earlier this season at Camden Yards. He was only 5-for-46 with a triple and home run with Norfolk.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers have called up former Orioles right-hander Chayce McDermott. The Orioles traded him on April 16 for minor league pitcher Axel Perez.
