The Orioles have recalled right-hander Tom Eshelman from Triple-A Norfolk as the logical replacement for Andrew Cashner on the 25-man roster.

The pairing between Eshelman and the Rays is a familiar one.

A fresh arm has arrived in Baltimore. Eshelman hasn’t pitched since July 7 in Charlotte, when he allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings. He was supposed to start today for Norfolk but instead will make his second major league appearance.

In four starts with the Tides, Eshelman has gone 1-1 with a 4.44 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 24 1/3 innings. He’s surrendered only four home runs.

The Orioles have an open spot on their 40-man roster but Eshelman already is on it.

Manager Brandon Hyde is trying to piece together his rotation and losing Cashner and Dylan Bundy has complicated the process.

Asher Wojciechowski is starting Tuesday night’s series opener against the Nationals at Camden Yards. Bundy was supposed to start Wednesday but he’s on the injured list with right knee tendinitis and the spot is listed at TBD.

Aaron Brooks could get the assignment after making his Orioles debut yesterday in Game 1 of the doubleheader and tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

The Orioles want to stretch out Brooks and give him a legitimate shot at a starting job.

Ryne Stanek is the Rays opener again today, with Ryan Yarbrough expected to back him up after being recalled last night.

The Nationals haven’t announced their starters for the Orioles series.
