ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The hot bat of second baseman Jonathan Schoop earned him recognition beyond the Orioles.
Schoop has been named the American League’s Player of the Week after batting .433 in seven games.
Schoop went 13-for-30 with two doubles, three home runs, 16 RBIs and eight runs scored, as the Orioles try to at least stay in the wild card hunt.

Schoop went 13-for-30 with two doubles, three home runs, 16 RBIs and eight runs scored, as the Orioles try to at least stay in the wild card hunt.
This is the first Player of the Week honor for Schoop, who currently leads the Orioles with a .307 average, .353 on-base percentage, .552 slugging percentage, 111 hits, 26 doubles, 21 home runs and 70 RBIs.
Schoop led the majors last week with 16 RBIs. He tied for first in the AL in hits, home runs and total bases (24), ranked second in runs scored, tied for third in extra-base hits (five) and fourth in slugging percentage (.800).
Named to his first All-Star team earlier this month, Schoop ranks third in the AL in RBIs, trailing the Mariners’ Nelson Cruz (75) and the Yankees’ Aaron Judge (73). He ranks second in the majors in RBIs among second baseman, with the Nationals’ Daniel Murphy ahead of him with 72.
First baseman Chris Davis was the last Oriole to win the weekly award on June 13, 2016.
Schoop, who needs one double to reach 100 for his career, figures to bat third again tonight against struggling Rays left-hander Blake Snell.
