Povich and Bruján join Orioles, tonight's lineups
PHILADELPHIA – The Orioles reinstated left-hander Cade Povich from the injured list today and he gets the ball to start a three-game series against the Phillies.
That wasn’t the only move.
Infielder/outfielder Vidal Bruján was activated and he’s wearing No. 40. The Orioles claimed him yesterday.
The counter moves were optioning reliever Houston Roth and outfielder Jordyn Adams. Roth didn’t make his major league debut before departing.
Povich has a 5.15 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in 13 games (12 starts). His only relief appearance came on June 15, with 3 2/3 scoreless innings before going on the IL with left hip inflammation.
Tyler O'Neill returns to the lineup after missing the last two games with an illness. He's the designated hitter.
Jeremiah Jackson stays in right field. Coby Mayo is at first base.
Twenty-nine of the 55 Orioles used this season have received an at-bat, including Trevor Rogers. That total is second to the White Sox’s 30 and six behind their highest amount in the designated hitter era (2000, 2013 and 2018), per STATS.
The Orioles have been involved in eight one-run games since the break, most in the majors. They had 22 in the first half, tied for second-fewest.
The Phillies are starting left-hander Jesús Luzardo, who’s registered a 4.31 ERA and 1.372 WHIP in 22 games. He’s surrendered only 10 home runs and struck out 140 batters in 121 innings.
Luzardo tossed seven scoreless innings in two starts last month, including Tuesday against the White Sox with only two hits allowed. Left-handers are batting .200/.236/.257 against him this season, and right-handers are batting .277/.346/.414.
Luzardo has made two career starts against the Orioles and posted a 5.59 ERA and 1.655 WHIP in 9 2/3 innings. He’s allowed six earned runs (nine total) and 12 hits.
The Phillies are in first place in the National League East with a 63-48 record, including 35-20 at home. They’re a half-game ahead of the Mets.
Their .254 average ranks sixth in the majors, their .325 on-base percentage fifth, and their .737 OPS ninth. The pitching staff’s 3.79 ERA is 10th, and the rotation’s 3.39 ERA is third. The bullpen’s 4.50 ERA and 1.36 WHIP are 24th, but they traded for closer Jhoan Duran.
Former Orioles minor leaguer Seth Johnson is on the roster.
The Orioles lost two of three games in Philadelphia in 2021 and 2023. They swept a three-game series in 2020 before dropping seven of eight, and they lost both games played at Citizens Bank Park in 2018.
