NEW YORK - The Orioles aren't done bringing up their top prospects over the final weeks of the season. Left-hander Tanner Scott is expected to join the club in New York this weekend, according to an industry source. Scott would join catcher Chance Sisco and outfielder Austin Hays as additions to the expanded roster. Scott, 23, went 0-2 with a 2.22 ERA in 24 starts at Double-A Bowie, with 17 runs and 45 hits in 69 innings. He walked 46 batters and struck out 87, and opponents batted .188...

Lobaton shakes off ankle injury, but Severino making a case

When he was trying to shake off the pitch that caught him square on the left ankle in the bottom of the second inning Thursday night, Jose Lobaton was asked by Nationals director of athletic training Paul Lessard if he could walk. In that moment, Lobaton honestly couldn't, so he told Lessard he needed to come out of the game. That justifiably had the Nationals concerned about the long-term health of their No. 2 catcher, but those fears were alleviated when X-rays on Lobaton's ankle came back...

NEW YORK - Austin Hays is making his first major league start tonight, replacing Adam Jones in center field. Manager Buck Showalter wants to give Jones a night off before the two day games that follow. Pedro Álvarez is serving as the designated hitter in his first start of 2017. Trey Mancini leads all rookies with 42 multi-hit games. Tim Beckham is 10-for-54 (.185) this month. Chris Davis is 6-for-45 (.133) with 21 strikeouts. The Orioles and Rays are tied for third place in the American...

As the Orioles look to get their offense going again, tonight they face the challenge of New York Yankees right-hander Luis Severino (12-6, 2.96 ERA). Severino is third in the American League in ERA, opponents batting average (.209) and WHIP (1.05) and fourth with 211 strikeouts. He has been even better than his overall stats in the second half. The 23-year-old Severino is 7-2 with a 2.07 ERA in 11 starts since the break. That is the best ERA in the league in that time and he has given up one...

Game 147 lineups: Nats vs. Dodgers

The Nationals haven't played any truly meaningful pennant-race games in mid-to-late September in any of the last six seasons. They've always either clinched the division or been too far back to have a realistic chance, leaving these last two weeks of the regular season to relatively meaningless ball. This weekend, then, provides the closest thing we may experience to exciting pennant-race baseball. The Dodgers are in town, and so this is a showdown between the National League's top two...

There is going to be a side story to the Dodgers-Nationals series this weekend, and like many side stories, it is flat and pointless, a time-filler to help get to the end of the season. Kind of like my run on sentences. This story is not a tale as old as time but it is one that is asked all the time of fans, players, media and front office staff: Who would you rather play in the first round? The Cubs have suffered a World Series hangover and limped through the season, but still have Anthony...

Big positive for left fielder Jayson Werth who has now played two games in a row after returning from a sore shoulder. On Thursday, Werth went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the Nationals' 5-2 win over the Braves. "He had four great at-bats tonight," manager Dusty Baker said. "Flirted with the wall a couple times and he's feeling better and you see Trea (Turner) is back, he has his stuff together so our next step is to get Jayson back to himself. And then the last step is to get (Bryce Harper)...

Chance Sisco showed a smooth swing and a quick bat as he picked up his first two major league hits last night. That was easily the highlight for the Orioles in a 13-5 loss at Yankee Stadium. Easily. Sisco pinch-hit in the seventh and lined a double down the right-field line. In the ninth he turned around a 95 mph fastball and homered to right. Scouts have always rated Sisco's ability to hit for average over his power. He hit a career-high seven homers this year in 97 games at Triple-A Norfolk...

It's been looming on the schedule for months, a late-season clash between the teams that have held the National League's top two records nearly the entire year. But when the Nationals and Dodgers open their weekend series tonight, there won't be as much on the line as there might have been not long ago. The combination of the Nationals' recent surge and the Dodgers' recent slide came together to take some juice away from this series. The Nats, of course, already clinched the NL East title...

September call-ups can give baseball fans a glimpse into the future of their club, teasing them for what might be in the next season - or for years to come. But when your top prospect comes up and is only 20, it might be too much pressure to put on his shoulders to deliver in his first few games at the sport's top level. That is certainly not the case for Victor Robles. On Thursday, Robles went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI and an electrifying triple that had Nats Park in a frenzy as...
