Following a long day of baseball complete with a 16-8 Orioles win over the Red Sox, players, coaches and members of the Orioles front office gathered for a night of entertainment on the field at Ed Smith Stadium on Saturday.
Top songwriters from Nashville performed a roundtable-style concert for those in the audience, which included manager Buck Showalter, first baseman Chris Davis and closer Zach Britton.
Broadcaster Jim Hunter served as the emcee at the event and noted "how well the concept...
Earlier this morning, on the day of the final scheduled Nationals game at Space Coast Stadium, my colleague Mark Zuckerman penned a thoughtful farewell to Viera. I'd like to add a few comments about the community that has been the Nationals' spring training home since 2005, one that has welcomed both fans and media members with open arms.
Saying goodbye is difficult. Whether it was reporters making the Space Coast their home away from home for six or seven weeks as winter morphed into spring...
Fans invited to ballpark to select their season seat location
With the start of the regular season fast approaching, the Orioles will host the return of Tag Day on Saturday, April 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
Tag Day allows fans who are interested in purchasing either a full or partial Season Plan for the 2016 season an opportunity to "try out" seats before they make a purchase. Available seats will be tagged with pennants, and Orioles representatives will...
The Orioles today announced that they have optioned right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne to Triple-A Norfolk. With this move, the Orioles now have 41 players at Major League Spring Training, including seven non-roster invitees.
As the Nationals enter their 12th season in Washington, they'll have a new manager, Dusty Baker, who is trying to get over the same hurdle as the team itself. Baker, at 66 the second-oldest manager in the majors behind the Mets' Terry Collins, is trying to win his first World Series ring as a manager. He came close in 2002 when his Giants lost the World Series in seven games to the Angels after leading three games to two.
The Nationals lost in the National League Division Series in 2012 to...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles manager Buck Showalter confirmed this morning that Kevin Gausman will begin the season on the disabled list after being shelved by tendinitis in his right shoulder.
Gausman, who went on the DL last May with the same condition, still could be available to start on April 10 against the Rays in Baltimore. His assignment will be backdated to March 25.
Otherwise, Showalter said Gausman could start April 13 against the Red Sox at Fenway Park "or later."
The DL move is...
VIERA, Fla. - And so we have come to this historic moment: the final spring training game ever played at Space Coast Stadium. And it's only fitting that it features the only two franchises that have called this place home since it opened in 1994: the Nationals and Marlins.
The Marlins, who have trained in Jupiter since 2003, aren't bringing anybody here today who would have been a part of those teams that played in this ballpark back in the day. They aren't bringing much of anybody of...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Make it three straight years for Chris Tillman as the opening day starter.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter confirmed this morning that Tillman will take the mound for the April 4 game against the Twins at Camden Yards.
Tillman entered camp as the favorite despite the Orioles signing veteran Yovani Gallardo last month to a restructured two-year deal with an option for 2018. And despite having his ERA climb from 3.34 in 2014 to 4.99 last season.
Last spring, Tillman became just...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Rule 5 pick Joey Rickard is in right field and Pedro Alvarez is at first base for today's game against the Red Sox in Fort Myers.
The Orioles lineup also includes Garabez Rosa at second base and Julio Borbon in left field. Both players came over from minor league camp.
Tyler Wilson and Brad Brach will pitch in relief today.
Left-hander Brian Matusz said he feels good after throwing 18 pitches yesterday in an intrasquad game at Twin Lakes Park. He's scheduled to pitch again on...
VIERA, Fla. - The question inevitably would come from someone every February, once you mentioned you were getting ready to leave for spring training.
"Where do the Nationals train?"
"Uh, it's a town called Viera. You've probably never heard of it."
"Vero Beach?"
"No, Viera. It's near Melbourne."
"Where's that?"
"Do you know where Cocoa Beach is?"
"Sort of."
"Well, it's ... eh, it's 45 minutes east of Orlando."
You'd have thought after 12 years folks would have learned...
