BOSTON - You can point the finger in a lot of different directions when figuring all the ways that the Orioles have bolted to a 16-9 start.
The club's bullpen deserves a big hand.
Orioles relievers have combined to post a 1.73 ERA heading into Friday night's game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, the lowest figure in the majors. They've permitted only seven earned runs in their last 53 innings, including a perfect ninth last night from closer Jim Johnson, which largely went unnoticed in...
NEW YORK - I'd just like to point out that I've got a 5-2 road record this season.
Chicago couldn't take me. Neither could New York.
So what have you got, Boston?
I'm getting ready to board another train, where I'll spend about four hours blogging, tweeting, reading or sleeping. I may do all four and shoot for the Mount Rushmore of rail travel.
The Orioles are off today, but you can bet that Robert Andino will be in Friday's lineup, and he'll be batting ninth again.
Manager Buck...
NEW YORK - You only had to look 60 feet, 6 inches to find two of the key components in the Orioles' 5-0 victory over the Yankees.
Jake Arrieta tore through the Yankees' lineup, shutting them out on five hits over eight innings, walking none and striking out nine. Catcher Matt Wieters guided Arrieta through yet another quality start by the Orioles and added a home run, double, single, walk and two RBIs.
"He was great," Wieters said of Arrieta, who hadn't won since Opening Day. "He had a...
NEW YORK - Start spreading the news: The Orioles took two of three in the Bronx.
It all started tonight with Jake Arrieta's masterful performance. He shut out the Yankees on five hits over eight innings, didn't walk a batter and tied his career high with nine strikeouts.
"I thought the biggest inning was the one after we scored the one run. Go back out there and throw a zero," manager Buck Showalter said after the 5-0 victory.
"Jake was as good as you can be, especially with all the...
NEW YORK - Once again, an Orioles starter pitched deep in a game tonight.
It all starts with starting pitching.
Jake Arrieta was superb, blanking the Yankees on five hits over a career-high eight innings. He didn't walk a batter and tied his career high with nine strikeouts.
Arrieta also tied Jason Hammel for the longest outing by an Orioles starter this season. Hammel lasted eight innings on April 8.
Robert Andino has three hits and a walk from the ninth spot in the order. He's now...
NEW YORK - The Orioles are 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position tonight, and they've stranded eight runners through the sixth inning.
Good thing Jake Arrieta is shutting out the Yankees.
Robert Andino's infield hit scored Chris Davis in the sixth to increase the Orioles' lead to 2-0. Endy Chavez lined into a double play - the third inning that's ended with him at the plate.
He smoked that ball, but he hit it directly at third baseman Eduardo Nunez, who replaced Eric Chavez in the...
NEW YORK - The Orioles aren't the only team adjusting its rotation this weekend.
According to a tweet from @GordonEdes, the Red Sox have scratched Josh Beckett from Saturday's start against the Orioles because of a stiff lat muscle.
Aaron Cook, just brought up from the minors, will start in Beckett's place.
Beckett is 7-5 with a 4.25 ERA in 18 career starts against the Orioles. Cook has never faced the Orioles, though they saw him at least once in spring training.
Wilson Betemit is...
NEW YORK - Manager Buck Showalter explained to reporters earlier today why Tommy Hunter is being held back until Sunday in Boston, with Jason Hammel moving up a day.
"Tommy's had an ingrown toenail that he's had cut on," Showalter said. "I just want to give him a couple extra days and get him back to 100 percent. He'll tell you that he is, but we had an opportunity and we'll see if we can give him a couple extra days there.
"He threw today. He's fine. He feels good. I just thought we...
NEW YORK - Tommy Hunter and Jason Hammel are being flip-flopped in the rotation for this weekend's series in Boston.
Hunter had an ingrown toenail removed and is being given an extra day to recover, which lines him up to pitch on Sunday at Fenway Park. Hammel will start on Saturday.
The day off tomorrow allows for extra rest for everyone in the rotation.
Also, Zach Britton is scheduled to pitch in a simulated game on Saturday at the Ed Smith Stadium complex in Sarasota.
Britton will start...
NEW YORK - Mark Reynolds is back in the Orioles' lineup tonight, starting at third base against Yankees right-hander Ivan Nova.
Nick Johnson remains the designated hitter after collecting his first hit last night.

Endy Chavez LF
J.J Hardy SS
Nick Markakis RF
Adam Jones CF
Matt Wieters C
Chris Davis 1B
Nick Johnson DH
Mark Reynolds 3B
Robert Andino 2B
Jake Arrieta RHP
For the Yankees:

NEW YORK - Orioles pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada has decided to undergo ligament-reconstructive surgery on his left elbow, ending his 2012 season before it actually started.
Dr. Lewis Yocum will perform the surgery on May 11 in Los Angeles. Yocum removed bone chips from Wada's elbow in 2007.
An MRI and CT scan confirmed a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament. The Orioles let Wada decide whether to have surgery or attempt to rehab.
The Orioles signed Wada to a two-year, $8.14 million...
NEW YORK - Before I head to Yankee Stadium for tonight's series finale, I wanted to explain more clearly what's happening with Nolan Reimold.
Well, the "clearly" part might be a reach, but anyway ...
Reimold's bulging disk is located in his cervical spine, and it's more neck than back. At least, that's how it's been explained to me. I'm not a doctor, so I'm depending on others to talk me through it.
The timetable hasn't changed. Orioles manager Buck Showalter is still hoping that...
NEW YORK - The news came fast and furious yesterday, beginning with outfielder Nolan Reimold's tingling fingers and continuing with hitting coach Jim Presley's kidney stone.
I hadn't left my hotel room in Times Square and my day already had taken a busy turn.
As I walked into the press box at Yankee Stadium, still beaming at my ability to take the D train in the proper direction on this day, the Orioles issued a news release explaining that the Brooks Robinson statue unveiling had been...
NEW YORK - I'm unable to access your comments at the moment because there's some sort of glitch with Disqus.
Yes, I'm disgusted over it.
Anyway, we're working to find a solution. In the meantime, here's a little something from Nick Johnson, who ended an 0-for-29 drought with a run-scoring double in the eighth inning:
"It feels good. It's been a long time, so it feels good and I'm happy we got the win," he said.
"It's been tough, but you've got to keep working. Try to get good...
NEW YORK - Brian Matusz won his first road game since Sept. 27, 2010 at Tampa Bay, snapping a seven-game losing streak away from home.
Eleven different Orioles starters earned victories since his last triumph.
Tonight's feat is more special to Matusz because of how it ties to manager Buck Showalter.
"It couldn't be more exciting being Buck's 1,000th win," Showalter said. "Growing up, I was a huge Diamondbacks fan and Showalter was the manager there. Watched a lot of his games there....
NEW YORK - The Orioles surrounded manager Buck Showalter on the field after tonight's 7-1 victory became official. "Mobbed him" might be a more accurate description.
In the clubhouse, the players toasted him with champagne rather than douse him with Gatorade or deliver a shaving cream pie to his face.
"It's kind of embarassing, quite frankly," he said. "I don't make any bones about it, I love baseball players, and it's been an honor to manage this long, with so many good people -...
NEW YORK - Well, that was a cruel tease.
Yankees left fielder Eduardo Nunez misjudged Nick Johnson's fly ball in the sixth inning, freezing on it before breaking in and failing to make a lunging catch. The baseball world held its collective breath for the official scorer's decision.
E-7.
Johnson's now 0-for-29 on the season, including 0-for-3 tonight.
The Orioles scored three runs in the sixth and knocked starter Phil Hughes out of the game. Hughes hit Matt Wieters with two outs, and...
NEW YORK - I'm talking about the good kind of tear here.
Chris Davis hit another home run tonight, his fourth in the last seven games, to tie the score at 1-1. He connected off Yankees starter Phil Hughes with one out in the second.
Davis is 8-for-18 with a double, four homers and nine RBIs in his last seven games. He's batting .319 with five homers and 13 RBIs on the season.
The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first on Curtis Granderson's home run off left-hander Brian Matusz. The ball...
NEW YORK - Orioles manager Buck Showalter indicated earlier today that Mark Reynolds will return to the lineup tomorrow against the Yankees, and also will play in the Red Sox series that begins Friday.
Tonight is another rest period for Reynolds, in part because Showalter is trying to get Nick Johnson on track.
Reynolds needs to do the same. He's batting .143 and hasn't hit a home run after totaling 37 last season. He hadn't gone a full month without homering since September...
NEW YORK - Manager Buck Showalter updated reporters on Nolan Reimold's tingling fingers and Tsuyoshi Wada's aching left elbow.
Showalter confirmed that Reimold has a bulging disk in his back and won't play in the last two games of this series. The Orioles are hoping that Reimold joins them in Boston for the three-game series that begins on Friday.
"They're trying a Medrol Dosepack to see if they can get the swelling down," Showalter said. "There's the potential that he could join us...
