The first five batters reached against Jeremy Guthrie in the first inning, and the Yankees took a 3-0 lead. Guthrie walked the leadoff hitter, Brett Gardner, with the count full, and Nick Johnson followed with a run-scoring double over left fielder Lou Montanez's head. Jorge Posada singled to right to put runners on the corners, and Robinson Cano lined the next pitch into left field to score Johnson for a 2-0 lead. Curtis Granderson worked the count full and singled to left to load the bases and bring pitching coach Rick Kranitz out of the dugout. Randy Winn got ahead, 3-1, before popping to short. Juan Miranda flied to left, bringing home Posada for a 3-0 lead. Brandon Laird reached on an infield hit to extend the inning before Ramiro Pena struck out looking. Guthrie allowed five hits and walked a batter. He threw 36 pitches, 22 for strikes. The Orioles want him to go four innings. That's going to be tricky. Teams have batted around three times in an inning against an Orioles starter, including Kevin Millwood twice. Nick Markakis ripped a single into right field in the top of the first after Cesar Izturis reached on an error. Miguel Tejada grounded into a double play to end the threat. Markakis is 7-for-15 this spring. Update: Ty Wigginton hit a two-run homer in the top of the second after Matt Wieters walked. Lou Montanez and Michael Aubrey followed with singles.
