OAKLAND - If you were wondering what else could go wrong for the Orioles, we found out in the top of the first inning today at Oakland. Potential All-Star Trey Mancini was hit by a pitch and left the game as Chris Davis pinch-ran for him and took over at first base.
A's right-hander Chris Bassitt threw a 3-1 sinker that didn't sink. It came up and in on Mancini at 92 mph. He tried to get his arm up while attempting to avoid the pitch, but it plunked him. An O's trainer came out to look at...
The Nationals waited 48 hours to take the field again, but Patrick Corbin had to wait a full eight days to take the mound again after a rocky start in Chicago that left the left-hander searching for an answer to his wayward command.
With an extra day of rest between starts, then back-to-back rainouts to sit through, Corbin had far too much time to contemplate his woes and try to formulate a plan to get himself back on track against a tough Phillies lineup.
"I thought I was going to have to...
OAKLAND - Orioles manager Brandon Hyde used the word "embarrassing" again to describe last night's 16-2 loss at Oakland and he said some changes could be coming when the Orioles play in Seattle starting tomorrow night.
"We have some potential roster moves coming in the next few days," Hyde said before today's game. "One, Smitty (Dwight Smith Jr.) probably will be there in Seattle. That went well in Scranton (in a rehab game last night). He felt good after the game. Smitty will be there...
Nationals starter Patrick Corbin has been desperately looking for a solution for a recent rough patch. The left-hander has not won a game since May 25, looking to snap a three-game losing streak.
Corbin was able to get started well, inducing a pair of flyouts to Jean Segura and Bryce Harper. But Scott Kingery got a hold of a 1-2 83 mph Corbin slider over the left field wall for his ninth homer of the season to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.
The Nats quickly tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom...
Jimmy Yacabonis makes his first start since Sept. 30 today as the Orioles try to avoid a sweep in Oakland and shake off last night's embarrassing 16-2 loss that included a 10-run sixth inning.
Yacabonis shut out the Astros on one hit over four innings in a 4-0 win to close out the 2018 season. He's been returned to a relief role, coming out of the bullpen in 13 games and posting a 5.40 ERA and 1.600 WHIP in 20 innings, but the Orioles are using him today as an opener.
Left-hander Josh Rogers...
If the Nationals play tonight, they expect Max Scherzer to take the mound, broken nose, black eye and all.
"I am convinced right now that Scherzer is going to pitch the second game," manager Davey Martinez said this morning before the opener of the Nationals' scheduled day-night doubleheader with the Phillies. "And then we'll go from there."
Scherzer broke his nose when he fouled off a bunt attempt Tuesday during batting practice. He was checked out by doctors, got a clean bill of health...
OAKLAND - This was not the way to start a road trip. The Orioles lost 3-2 at Oakland on Monday night when they allowed two unearned runs and were held to just three hits. They got blasted 16-2 last night, allowing six homers and a 10-run inning in the worst loss of the year.
The Orioles have no series sweeps this year, but they have been swept six times, most recently at home by the Boston Red Sox.
The Orioles have matched a career-high with seven straight losses. The current run of defeats has...
OAKLAND - It wasn't actually the first time this year the Orioles had allowed 16 runs in a game. But when it happened Tuesday night at Oakland, a manager who has had to handle interviews so many nights about a pitching staff that came up short, seemed to be exasperated to have to do it again.
Who could blame Orioles skipper Brandon Hyde?
That was indeed hard to watch. O's pitching allowed 16 runs to tie a season-high first set April 20 versus Minnesota, giving up 10 of them in the last of the...
OAKLAND - It was not hard to analyze this loss. There were no key throwing errors, late leads lost or controversial video reviews. Orioles pitching just got blasted.
The Oakland A's scored 10 runs in the last of the sixth on eight hits and hit three homers that inning on their way to a 16-2 romp over the Orioles.
Three O's pitchers were hit hard that inning, which began with the A's leading 4-2 and the Orioles still very much in this game. But Robbie Grossman's two-run homer off starter...
FREDERICK, Md. - The South Division had jumped to a quick 4-0 lead in the second when Single-A Frederick third baseman Willy Yahn went up and down the North Division dugout, trying to pump up his teammates.
"I was just saying to the guys - semi-joking around and semi-serious - 'Greatest comeback in All-Star Game history coming up,' " Yahn said. "We're just trying to compete, no matter what the score is."
Yahn capped a four-run sixth inning with a two-run double that shaved the South lead...
