The Washington Nationals recalled right-handed pitchers Jimmy Cordero and Jefry Rodriguez from Triple-A Syracuse and optioned Trevor Gott to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday. Additionally, they placed right-handed pitcher Jeremy Hellickson on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to Aug. 16) with a right wrist sprain. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.
Cordero, 26, joins the Nationals for his second Major League stint of the season....
CLEVELAND - The addition of outfielder John Andreoli earlier today on a waiver claim has filled the Orioles' 40-man roster. They optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk.
Andreoli's father, also named John, played linebacker for the NFL's New England Patriots and USFL's Boston Breakers in the 1980s. The younger Andreoli is cousins with former major league pitcher Daniel Bard.
Today's game will begin after the Indians conclude their ceremony for Jim Thome that includes the retiring of his No. 25....
After right-hander David Hess delivered the Orioles' fifth quality start in the last 10 games last night, right-hander Alex Cobb (3-15, 5.31 ERA) will look to add to that total this afternoon. After Friday's 2-1 loss at Cleveland, the Orioles play the second game of a three-game set with the Indians.
Cobb has two of those five quality starts and he's been pitching his best ball of the year lately. Cobb has allowed exactly one earned run in four of his past five starts. He has recorded four...
The Nationals tonight are seeking their third straight win, and they'll be doing so with a different pitcher on the mound then they originally planned. Tommy Milone no longer is starting this game; instead it'll be Jefry Rodriguez getting the promotion from Triple-A Syracuse. We haven't heard any official reasoning for this, but the hunch is simply that they liked the Rodriguez matchup against the Marlins better than Milone (who will still be available out of the bullpen).
We're awaiting...
On a recent visit to the Little Bighorn site, a good friend asked the tour guides what was in their opinion the best historical book regarding the battle. "A Terrible Glory" by James Donovan is that book.
There is more here than the history of the actual battle. We are taken in short form through the life of George Armstrong Custer. The "boy general" of the Civil War sought fame through the wearing of the uniform and he certainly found it.
The June 25-26, 1876, event was also known by the...
CLEVELAND - The Orioles have claimed outfielder John Andreoli off waivers from the Mariners today and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk. The announcement came during batting practice before today's game against the Indians at Progressive Field.
The Mariners designated Andreoli, 28, for assignment on Friday after he batted .287/.397/.401 with 18 doubles, five triples, three home runs, 36 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 89 games with Triple-A Tacoma.
Andreoli made his major league debut this summer...
CLEVELAND - Cedric Mullins is back in the leadoff spot for this afternoon's Orioles game against the Indians.
Craig Gentry is playing right field and hitting eighth, while Austin Wynns is catching and batting ninth.
Indians rookie right-hander Adam Plutko is making his seventh major league start and 12th appearance. He's never faced the Orioles.
Left-handers are batting .313/.385/.638 against him during his brief career. Right-handers are hitting .221/.242/.474.
Alex Cobb is 3-2 with a 3.64...
The Nationals announced late morning that right-hander Jefry Rodriguez will start tonight against the Miami Marlins instead of left-hander Tommy Milone.
This will be Rodriguez's fifth start and seventh appearance this season with the Nats. He is 1-1 with a 5.84 ERA. His last start was August 7 against the Braves. Rodriguez went five innings, allowing one run one three hits with one walk and three strikeouts earning his first major league win.
It does not appear that anything is wrong with...
The Orioles are now 50 games under .500 at 36-86 after Friday's 2-1 loss at Cleveland. The Orioles are 15-46 on the road with 17 losses in their last 20 away from Oriole Park.
With 40 games to go, the Orioles would have to go 27-13 to avoid 100 losses.
Despite another loss, right-hander David Hess pitched well enough to win and that was a positive development. He recorded his first quality start since June 7 and his fifth on the year. After an extended stretch of tough starts, Hess may be...
Max Scherzer didn't need to go nine innings to subdue the Marlins on Friday night. He didn't need to strike out a dozen opposing batters. Thanks to the offense behind him, the Nationals ace had the latitude to pitch effectively and put zeros on the scoreboard.
Never mind that the 96 pitches the right-hander threw on a hot, humid night with the heat index approaching 100 degrees at first pitch were his fewest in 26 starts this season. Scherzer still carved up the Fish during six scoreless...
