The Orioles needed a fresh bullpen arm after yesterday's doubleheader and selected the contract of right-hander Jhan Mariñez from Triple-A Norfolk.
Mariñez replaces right-hander Ryan Meisinger, who worked three scoreless and hitless innings last night in Game 2.
The move will be announced later today. Meisinger's locker already has been emptied.
Mariñez, 29, signed a minor league contract with the Orioles on Nov. 28, joining his ninth organization. He's 1-5 with a 3.43 ERA and 1.452...
The Washington Nationals recalled right-handed pitchers Wander Suero and Austin Voth from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday. Additionally, the Nationals placed left-handed pitcher Sean Doolittle on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to July 7) with left toe inflammation and optioned right-handed pitcher Jefry Rodriguez to Triple-A Syracuse. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.
Suero, 26, returns for his third major league stint of the...
PITTSBURGH - The Nationals need innings tonight from their starter. Which means Jeremy Hellickson may have to be pushed beyond the point they've preferred to push him so far this season. The right-hander has pitched six innings only once in 11 starts this season. He has topped the 90-pitch mark only three times.
None of that may matter given the state of the Nats bullpen, which has been forced to throw a total of 27 innings over the last six days. That group does have two fresh arms added to...
Joey Rickard is in right field tonight and Adam Jones returns to center after last night's break during Game 2 of a doubleheader.
Tim Beckham remains the leadoff hitter. Trey Mancini is playing left field and batting seventh.
Caleb Joseph is behind the plate.
Andrew Cashner has registered three consecutive quality starts and five in his last six outings, the exception coming after a long rain delay in D.C. after he tossed four scoreless innings. He's 0-3 with three no-decisions in that...
Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop said several times earlier this year that he didn't want to ponder life as an Oriole without his best friend, shortstop Manny Machado. But as the trade talks heat up and Machado's time as an Oriole may be down to days, Schoop did ponder it for a moment during an interview yesterday.
"That will be hard. That will be hard," Schoop said twice of a possible Machado deal. "We go way back. I don't want to imagine that day coming. I know it's business. But...
PITTSBURGH - Matt Wieters' return from the disabled list was rather uneventful. The veteran catcher went 1-for-4 at the plate, caught all eight defensive innings and allowed two Pittsburgh runners to steal second base. Of greater importance to Wieters was that his surgically repaired hamstring held up and allowed him to play a full big league game for the first time in nearly two months.
"Obviously, would've liked to get a win, but it was fun to be out there with the guys again," he said....
Think the Manny Machado trade talk is hot now? It's only going to get worse until the Orioles make the trade or the July 31 non-waiver deadline arrives.
Speculation runs wild. The latest, from The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, says the Yankees are interested. Apparently, the Yankees are going to cut into their rebuilding and offer a package that includes third baseman Miguel Andujar.
Where will Machado, the shortstop that can also play third base, end up? Every insider has a different idea about...
While craving young pitching talent in any trade involving Manny Machado, the Orioles also could use a replacement for him at shortstop, or at least a temporary plan for filling the position. They aren't going to shift the rest of the season and leave the spot empty.
Cadyn Grenier, the second-round pick last month out of Oregon State, is playing at low Single-A Delmarva and must wait for his chance in the majors. His defense alone could elevate him to the Double-A level, according to some...
Orioles right-hander Yefry RamÃrez showed a good changeup and some poise when he got into jams tonight. But the New York Yankees still hit him enough to take a 4-0 lead on their way to an 10-2 victory over the Orioles. The clubs split a doubleheader in front of 26,340 at Oriole Park.
The Orioles won the opener 5-4 as Danny Valencia hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the last of the sixth.
Coming off an outing at Philadelphia where he allowed one hit and one earned run in five innings,...
PITTSBURGH - The Nationals have any number of issues right now, from a super-erratic lineup equally capable of being shut out or scoring 17 runs on any given night, to a steady stream of mistakes made on the bases and in the field.
None of those issues, however, can or should take priority at the moment over the most glaring problem facing this club: a starting rotation that shockingly has morphed from the roster's biggest strength to its biggest weakness.
Aside from Max Scherzer, the...
