Waiting for the next reliever to join the Orioles
Waiting for the next reliever to join the Orioles

With the Orioles coming upon the second open date on their schedule, I feel supremely confident that their streak of roster moves will end at five days in a row. Unless, of course, they decide to announce the corresponding move for pitcher Yefry Ramirez, optioned last night to Triple-A Norfolk, instead of waiting until Friday. So much for supremely confident. I was blindsided yesterday by the decision to recall utility infielder Engelb Vielma, but it made sense considering that Hunter Harvey...

Trey Mancini stood at his locker tonight with his right middle finger wrapped and a few jokes at the ready. It was safe to laugh after an X-ray came back negative. Mancini was hit on the right hand while swinging at an inside pitch from Blue Jays reliever John Axford in the Orioles' 5-3 victory at Camden Yards. He stayed in the game and singled to right field, took his position in left after a few practice throws and left in the top of the ninth. Being off Thursday will give Mancini more time...

The outburst was so unexpected and rare coming from the home team that Van Halen's "Eruption" should have provided the soundtrack. If a guitar solo is sufficient for a three-run inning. The Orioles eliminated the no-hit drama in the fourth with Manny Machado's leadoff double and they actually worked Blue Jays starter Marco Estrada for 33 pitches while taking the lead. Jonathan Schoop, in a 1-for-25 funk, followed with a double to tie the game, Chris Davis - booed after striking out on three...

After 7-1 and 2-1 losses, the Orioles need a win at home tonight to avoid getting swept three straight by the Toronto Blue Jays. The Orioles are 4-8 and Toronto is 8-4. Toronto is 3-0-1 in its four series. They split four with the Yankees and then won two of three from both the White Sox and Rangers. A Toronto win tonight would give them their first three-game sweep in Baltimore since July 16-18, 2010. O's starters Dylan Bundy and Andrew Cashner combined to pitch 14 innings allowing just two...

Pressed into extra duty again, Nats bullpen can't finish the job
Pressed into extra duty again, Nats bullpen can't finish the job

Life in a major league bullpen is strange. Forty-eight hours ago, the Nationals relief corps was exhausted, desperately in need of a night off, forever grateful to Max Scherzer for giving them exactly that with a complete game and then grateful to Stephen Strasburg for nearly duplicating the feat the next night. So the unit was well-rested and ready to go today when the Nationals hosted the Braves in their series finale. And then 3 hours, 43 minutes and 12 innings of baseball later, everybody...

With Mark Trumbo rejoining the Orioles after one game at Double-A Bowie, his rehab assignment is now delayed but not denied. He's going to report to an affiliate at a later date. Trumbo served as the designated hitter last night with the Baysox while recovering from a Grade 2 strain of his right quadriceps muscle. The discomfort didn't return last night, but Trumbo apparently isn't ready to go at full speed and risk a blowout. The Orioles will take Trumbo to Boston and monitor his...

Adams demonstrates value with dramatic game-tying home run

It came in a 5-3, 12-inning loss to his former team, but Matt Adams' dramatic game-tying solo homer against the Braves with one out in the bottom of the ninth was a very big deal. "It felt good. It was a big-time moment," Adams said. "I'm the type of guy, I want to do whatever it is, whether it's that, a walk, get on base, keep the line moving. This team has got a lot of great guys on it. Just to keep the line moving is an important part. Like you guys saw today, we keep fighting until...

Mark Trumbo is in the Orioles' clubhouse this afternoon and the Orioles have halted his rehab assignment with Double-A Bowie. Manager Buck Showalter said Trumbo didn't experience a setback. This is done more as a precaution. "Just talking with him and the trainers, he's at 36 days and he's actually a little ahead of things, so we're going to slow that down a little bit," Showalter said. "He just felt like last night, he just didn't feel like pushing it. Thought he still wasn't...

They got the start they needed from A.J. Cole. They got the big blast they needed from Matt Adams to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. And they got the clutch hit they needed from Howie Kendrick to keep the game going in the bottom of the 11th. But the Nationals bullpen could not post a zero when the club most needed one in extra innings, and so a wild Wednesday matinee on South Capitol Street ended in frustrating fashion for the home club, which suffered a 5-3 loss in 12 innings and...
