The Washington Nationals recalled right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde from Triple-A Syracuse and optioned right-handed pitcher Trevor Gott to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. Fedde, 25, returns to the Nationals to make his second Major League start of the 2018 season. In 11 starts for Triple-A Syracuse, Fedde is 3-2 with a 4.76 ERA. He has struck out 61 batters in 56.2 IP (9.7 SO/9.0 IP) while issuing...

NEW YORK - The Nationals have been shut out in back-to-back games for the 12th time in club history. They've never been shut out in back-to-back-to-back games, so there's the minimum bar for success in tonight's series finale at Yankee Stadium. After flailing away at C.C. Sabathia and three Yankees relievers Tuesday night, the Nats will get a shot tonight at right-hander Sonny Gray, who enters with a 4.81 ERA but has allowed only one run over his last 14 innings. Daniel Murphy, who was...

When the Orioles play the finale of their three-game series with Boston this afternoon, 24-year-old right-hander Yefry Ramirez will get the start and make his major league debut. Acquired by the Orioles from the New York Yankees last July 31 for international bonus slots, the Dominican Republic native has been pitching this year with Triple-A Norfolk. He spent one day on the Orioles roster this season on April 10, but did not pitch and was optioned back to the minors the next day. In 12 starts...

The Orioles spent the morning and part of the afternoon deciding on the corresponding roster move for pitcher Yefry Ramirez, debating the wisdom of removing a reliever and finding themselves undermanned in the bullpen with a rookie making his first major league start. Risky business, for sure. Left-hander Donnie Hart has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after spending one day with the club. He worked a scoreless inning last night, though he allowed two hits and walked a batter and needed a 9-2...

The Orioles are deciding on their corresponding roster move for Yefry Ramirez, who makes his major league debut today. They're leery of removing a reliever and being short in the bullpen. Chris Davis is out of the lineup again today as the Orioles close out their series against the Red Sox, who are sending left-hander Chris Sale to the mound. Davis also sat last night against left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez. Adam Jones also is on the bench today to provide some rest. He's fine physically other...

Ralph Warner, 11, loves baseball. It's obvious from the way he talks about Major League Baseball players he idolizes, his favorite team - the New York Mets, and his youth baseball team. Warner recently traveled to Maryland from his home in Midland Park, N.J., to compete in the Cal Ripken Experience Turn Two Tournament. He was on the mound in a championship bracket game when he was struck by a line drive. He was rushed to Johns Hopkins Hospital and put in the intensive care unit with a...

Your pitchers can't get you a win if you don't score any runs. By all means, a starting pitcher that goes at least six innings and only gives up two or three runs should not be an automatic loss. It's not the greatest start of their life, but they're keeping the other team in arm's reach. That's not a lot of runs for a starter to give up, especially if they're going long, and in theory the offense should be able to produce enough runs to at least make it a net zero. But that hasn't been...

At least this time while the Orioles were taking another loss they also saw the return of closer Zach Britton to the mound. He had Achilles surgery in December and the long road back to a big league mound culminated with his appearance in the seventh inning in last night's 6-4 loss to Boston. Pitching for the first time in the majors since Sept. 18, 2017, Britton threw just 11 of 26 pitches for strikes and he walked three. He somehow managed to not give up a run. He did not get charged with a...

If this is what's become of the 2018 season, so be it. Give Yefry Ramirez a start. Keep giving David Hess starts. Begin an intense talent evaluation while also trying - and this is the tricky part - to avoid a season that elicits sympathy from the '62 Mets. Or the '88 Orioles, who lost their first 21 games and were 18-47 on June 17. This year's model is 19-47 heading into today's series finale against the Red Sox. Ramirez might be one and done with Andrew Cashner expected to miss only one...
