The Nationals reinstated first baseman Ryan Zimmerman from the Paternity List on Monday and optioned infielder Trea Turner to Triple-A Syracuse. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. Zimmerman, 31, was hitting .250 with a .312 on-base percentage and a .451 slugging percentage when he went on the Paternity List on June 3. The first baseman has collected 11 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, and 26 RBI for the Nationals in 48 games...

The Nationals reinstated Ryan Zimmerman off the paternity leave list this morning and optioned Trea Turner back to Triple-A Syracuse, a move that was expected all along but nonetheless raised the question once again of the organization's plan for its top infield prospect. Zimmerman was required to return to the active roster after spending the maximum three days on paternity leave following the birth of his second daughter on Thursday. He'll rejoin the club in Chicago in time for Tuesday's...

So, the Nationals just lost two out of three to the second-worst team in the National League, allowing 22 runs 31 hits and seven home runs to the 21-36 Reds. Let's dwell on the positives, though, shall we? Despite the pitching staff getting spanked by one of the league's top hitting teams, the struggling offense finally showed some signs of life. In Sunday's comeback win, it was downright resilient. After having his 11-game hitting streak snapped, Daniel Murphy was on the verge of going...

Andrew Stetka: O's pitchers falling victim to longball in recent weeks

Just three weeks ago in this very space, I wrote about what a great job Orioles pitchers were doing in limiting home runs. It came right on the back of a second seven-game winning streak and strong performances by the likes of Chris Tillman and Kevin Gausman. Things have taken an unfortunate turn. After going through the first six weeks or so of the season and sitting second in baseball with the fewest home runs allowed, the O's have now fallen out of the top 10. They were hanging around...

The Orioles are facing another left-hander tonight, Kansas City's Danny Duffy, which could keep Hyun Soo Kim on the bench for another game. It's the only way to remove a .377 hitter from the lineup. A hitter with a .449 on-base percentage. A scout from outside the organization said he has to tear up his old scouting report on Kim from spring training and change the grade assigned to the former Korean Baseball Organization star. The scout noted improvements in Kim's body language, approach at...

No one is necessarily saying he is the best pitcher on the Orioles farm right now. But no hurler may currently be pitching better than Single-A Frederick right-hander Matthew Grimes. An 18th-round pick by the Orioles in 2014 out of Georgia Tech, his latest gem came at home on Saturday night against Carolina when he pitched seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball with eight strikeouts. The same team had seen him six days earlier and he pitched eight shutout innings then. A 24-year-old from...

CINCINNATI - The bullpen was certainly tested Sunday when starter Tanner Roark had to be pulled after three innings with the Nationals trailing by five runs. Left-hander Sammy Solis was solid again, pitching three innings of scoreless baseball and racking up a career-high six strikeouts. In 13 games, he now has a 1.59 ERA in 17 innings. Last season, he said at times his off speed offerings were not as repeatable. This season, he has much more confidence in every pitch he throws. "Just staying...

He is not called on to pinch-hit very much, but Matt Wieters was asked to do that today. He came up with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth inning with the Orioles losing 1-0 to the Yankees. The count reached 0-2 against flame-throwing lefty Aroldis Chapman, who was perfect so far in save chances for the Yankees. Then Chapman delivered a 101 mph pitch. Wieters singled to center to score two runs and an error plated a third. It was a dramatic hit and a 3-1 comeback win for the Orioles...

Orioles manager Buck Showalter confirmed that Mike Wright will start Monday night against the Royals at Camden Yards. Showalter used T.J. McFarland out of the bullpen today, and the left-hander earned the win in a 3-1 victory over the Yankees before 28,807 at Camden Yards. Matt Wieters sat through the first seven innings today. He sat through a 1 hour, 37 minute rain delay. Sent to the plate in the eighth as a pinch-hitter for Ryan Flaherty, he fell behind 0-2 on two Aroldis Chapman 99 mph...
