The Orioles activated reliever Chaz Roe from the 15-day disabled list and he's in the bullpen tonight. He could be available to pitch on Wednesday. Shortstop J.J. Hardy took ground balls today and said he still expects to be activated from the DL when eligible on Sept. 8. He needs to run and make sure there's no lingering discomfort in his groin. As for tonight's lineup, Steve Pearce is in left field, Manny Machado returns to third base and Paul Janish is starting at shortstop. Dariel...

September has arrived, and the Orioles' and Nationals' playoff hopes are hanging by a thread. The Nationals are struggling to catch the Mets in the National League East. They play each other six times, including the final weekend of the season. The Mets have 22 games left against the Phillies, Marlins, Reds and Braves, which is bad news for Washington. The Orioles are battling to stay out of the basement in the American League East and they play the Blue Jays seven times, the Yankees six...

Bullpen inconsistency, rough August some of the reasons for Nationals' predicament
Bullpen inconsistency, rough August some of the reasons for Nationals' predicament
Byron Kerr
Nationals
The bullpen has never really been able to get in a rhythm this season. It is one of the reasons the Nationals stumble into September after losing 17 of 29 games in August. Similar to the offense and injuries plaguing consistency, the bullpen lost right-hander Craig Stammen to a torn flexor tendon in early April just as the season was beginning. Stammen has the unique ability to be a specialist, a long reliever, a fire extinguisher and even began is career as a starter. He could pretty much do...

One day after deciding to select the contract of right-hander Steve Johnson from Triple-A Norfolk, the Orioles also are leaning toward recalling reliever Oliver Drake, according to an official. He's expected in Baltimore for the Rays series this week. Drake, who pitched at the Naval Academy, is 1-2 with a 0.82 ERA and 0.89 WHIP and 23 saves in 42 games with Norfolk. He's allowed only four runs and 23 hits in 44 innings, with 16 walks and 66 strikeouts. The Orioles were tempted to keep Drake...

Nationals
Last week, Nationals fans got the disappointing news that center fielder Denard Span, who had just come off the disabled list, needed hip surgery and would be out for the rest of the 2015 season. This is a huge blow for the team and Nats fans. In his three seasons on the Nationals, Span became a fan favorite and a Gold Glove-caliber center fielder. Since he becomes a free agent at the end of this season, and given how Michael A. Taylor has played this year, chances are Span has played his last...

When it comes to the Orioles, there's a lot to be negative about right now. They just lost yet again and they've dropped 12 of their last 14 games. They ended August with only 11 wins in 29 games. Hisashi Iwakuma fired a no-hitter against them in Seattle. The Twins took all four games in a crucial series at Camden Yards. They were also swept out of Texas to complete a dismal road trip. Considering what they've done since the day Buck Showalter arrived on the scene, this horrendous stretch of...
