The state's official Hall of Fame began...
KANSAS CITY - As the 20th anniversary of his historic night crept closer, Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. found himself in an unusually reflective mood. Images flashed in his head, his father's face causing emotions to bubble to the surface. He saw the smile, the wave, and was transported back in time.
Even an Iron Man can get sentimental.
Ripken played in his 2,131st consecutive game on Sept. 6, 1995 to break Lou Gehrig's unbreakable record. The final tally read 2,632 before Ripken removed...
The Padres tallied the first run of the game after Joe Ross rolled through the first three innings.
The Nationals right-hander did not allow a hit through the first three frames.
But in the fourth, Cory Spangenberg hit a dribbler in front of home plate. Catcher Wilson Ramos retrieved it, but through wildly to first. The ball was not close to first baseman Ryan Zimmerman and sailed down the line into foul territory. Spangenberg ended up at third base. Ramos was charged with a two-base error on...
KANSAS CITY - To the surprise of no one, Orioles center fielder Adam Jones said following today's 5-3 loss to the Royals that he feels fine and he expects to play Friday night in the series opener against the Rangers in Arlington.
Jones underwent X-rays on his wrists and neck after slamming into the unpadded portion of the fence at Kauffman Stadium while chasing Ben Zobrist's fly ball in the bottom of the first inning. He left the game in the third, saying he didn't feel like...
The Orioles today announced that they have optioned right-hander Jorge Rondon to Triple-A Norfolk.
Rondon, 27, allowed one run over 4.0 innings in two outings after being recalled from the Tides on August 24. In three games with the Orioles this season since being claimed off waivers from the Colorado Rockies on May 10, Rondon has posted a 1.23 ERA (7.1IP, ER) while striking out three and walking one. Over five major league games between the Orioles and Rockies this season, he has pitched to an...
While he began today with a 4.64 ERA on the year over 20 starts, Kansas City right-hander Yordano Ventura had allowed just three runs over his last three starts. The Orioles got a firsthand look at his recent improvement. Ventura fanned 11 over six scoreless innings this afternoon as Kansas City beat the Orioles 5-3.
The Royals took three of four in this series. While the Orioles hit five homers last night and won 8-5, they scored just eight total runs in the series' other three games.

Right-hander Joe Ross (4-5, 3.56 ERA) opposes righty Andrew Cashner (5-12, 4.03 ERA).
Ian Desmond is 3-for-10 against Cashner, while Ryan Zimmerman has the lone...
Center fielder Denard Span is not in the lineup tonight. The Nationals put left fielder Jayson Werth back in the leadoff role for Thursday night's series finale against the San Diego Padres.
Manager Matt Williams said it was nothing serious for Span, who has been on the disabled list already twice this season and has had recurring issues with his back. Instead, it is just a day off because of what Span told Williams this morning.
"Yesterday, coming in, he was a little bit tight (and) loosened...
KANSAS CITY - Adam Jones came out of today's game in the top of the third inning after slamming into the unpadded portion of the Kauffman Stadium fence in the first.
Jones was chasing Ben Zobrist's fly ball, which took a high hop for an automatic double. He began to stumble and hit the fence straight-on while trying to regain his balance.
Jones crumbled to the warning track and laid motionless while Steve Pearce signaled to the dugout. Head athletic trainer Richie Bancells and manager Buck...
The Nationals are struggling to keep pace in the National League East, but there's still a good chance they are going to win the division.
The reason: The first-place New York Mets are facing pitching issues as the season goes into the final month. In a nutshell, the Mets' pitching has gone from a strength to a concern.
The Mets' young starters are running out of gas, and the bullpen is thin and will be running near empty by mid-September. The Mets' bridge from rotation to bullpen is...
