The Orioles signed a pair of veteran left-handers to minor league contracts this week. Andy Oliver and former Oriole Dana Eveland agreed to deals and were assigned to Triple-A Norfolk, according to a club official. Oliver exercised his opt-out clause after going 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 25 relief appearances with Triple-A Durham, the Rays' top affiliate. He walked 24 and struck out 32 in 28 innings. Oliver, 27, is 0-5 with a 7.11 ERA and 1.832 WHIP in seven career starts with the Tigers in...

The Orioles' second-round pick of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, Jonathan Hughes, will not sign and has chosen to attend college at Georgia Tech. Hughes was the No. 68 overall selection in the draft. The Orioles will receive the 69th overall pick in the 2016 draft as compensation, per MLBpipeline.com, which first reported the news. Huges, a 6-foot-2, 184-lb. right-handed pitcher, is the highest unsigned Orioles pick since Wade Townsend in 2004 (No. 8 overall). The 18-year old from Flowery...

I wanted to be able to better articulate the value of Orioles All-Star reliever Darren O'Day. In attempting to do so, I developed an appreciation for the late Stu Miller. That's the sort of thing that can happen when you dig into the numbers late at night. The difference in my understanding of both players was a lesser-mentioned statistic that speaks to the value of relief pitchers. Ask most O's fans to talk about O'Day's value and you're as likely to hear a chant as you are any kind of...

The Washington Nationals made three selections in the 2007 draft before their second-round pick came up at No. 67. At that point they had a decision to make, but they couldn't come to an agreement. There was a difference of opinion among the front office executives and scouts gathered in the nation's capital, as now-former general manager Jim Bowden explained in a 2011 segment of his show on MLB Network Radio. "Everybody's lists are different," Bowden explained. "We got to the point of...

A large reason the Nationals enter the second half of the season holding a two game lead in the National League East has to do with the significant contributions of several rookies. Let's take a look at who has been the best of the youngsters so far. 5. Sammy Solis: After undergoing Tommy John surgery and battling several other nagging injuries, the 26-year-old left-hander finally made his major league debut on April 30 at Citi Field. Solis limited the Mets to one hit while striking out one...

To sell or not to sell, that is the question. I don't know if they represent a large percentage of fans or not, but it seems that an increasing number of Orioles fans want the team to sell off players if they start the second half losing as they ended the first. The Orioles are 44-44 - four games out of first place - losing 10 of their last 13 games heading in the All-Star break. They have scored three runs or less in eight of their last 10 games. Last year's Orioles team won 96 games, and...

Nationals left fielder Jayson Werth (left wrist) completed a rehab game last night in high Single-A Potomac's 1-0 loss to Myrtle Beach. Werth went 1-for-2 with a single and a strikeout. He also had to go after a double by Pelicans center fielder Trey Martin in the third inning. Werth played three innings and reportedly everything went well. Manager Matt Williams told "The Junkies" on 106.7 The Fan that Werth would be the designated hitter tonight for five innings, and he expects Werth to...

The break is finally over. The Home Run Derby, the All-Star Game, the workout in Detroit - it's all in the Orioles' rear view mirror. How much longer do we reflect on the first half? The Orioles are taking their 44-44 record to Comerica Park for tonight's series opener against the Tigers. They've lost 10 of their last 13 games to fall four back in the American League East. The Orioles are 17-26 on the road and 15-16 in the first game of a series. They're 12-14 in one-run games, 7-13 in...
