Early in the season, Anthony Rendon took over the hot corner, leaving the Nationals with a hole at second base. At the trade deadline, Mike Rizzo filled that opening with veteran Asdrubal Cabrera, adding an experienced glove and valuable bat as the Nats prepared for a postseason run. Cabrera has been known for flashing some leather throughout his career, and that proved to be no different during his time in the nation's capital. Cabrera performed as a human highlight reel at second base with...

Like every offseason, the Orioles starting rotation has become a primary focus. But this year is a little different than most. The O's seem to have too many starting pitchers, ending the season with six potential starters to fill five rotation spots. With that being said, a few of the O's hurlers have been mentioned in the never-ending rumor mill of trade talks. While Baltimore fans wait to see who stays and who goes, let's throw it back to one of the best pitching performances of 2014....

Nationals
Over the last week, we've seen the Nationals make a couple of moves that cleared up space on the team's 40-man roster. Left-hander Matt Purke was released, and then subsequently re-signed to a minor league contract. That series of moves opened up a spot on the 40-man. On Tuesday, catcher Jhonatan Solano was also released, leaving the Nats with 38 players on their 40-man roster. And with today being the reserves deadline - the last chance for teams to add minor leaguers that are eligible for...

The Orioles remain open to re-signing free agent outfielder Delmon Young, who evolved into baseball's best pinch-hitter this season. However, Young is looking for a two-year deal, which doesn't figure to provide a match. If Young returns to Baltimore, the agreement likely would cover only the 2015 season. Young, naturally, will seek a lengthier contract after auditioning for the Orioles at their minicamp in January and settling for a minor league deal. Young batted .302/.337/.442 with 11...

The Orioles are the only team in baseball that can claim this distinction: The current executive and manager of the year reside in Baltimore. Dan will do it. In Buck we trust. What Buck Showalter started when he changed the culture with the Orioles franchise, Dan Duquette enhanced it and took a step further as he picked up the ball left behind by Andy MacPhail. Those three men changed a few things around here. Once the doormat of the division and a franchise that endured 14 straight losing...

The Orioles are taking care of minor league business today, re-signing infielder Michael Almanzar and left-hander Chris Jones, and signing seven players from outside the organization. Also signed were left-handers Frank Gailey and Ronan Pacheco, infielder/outfielder Derrik Gibson, shortstop Ozzie Martinez and right-handers Tim Gustafson, Kenn Kasparek and Mikey O'Brien. I wrote about Martinez on Monday. His signing became official today. Gibson, 24, may be the most intriguing. The Red Sox...

Our next Nationals farmhand on the Baseball Prospectus top 10 organizational prospects list brings us to great speed in the outfield and a steady bat. No. 9: Center fielder Rafael Bautista Bautista had an impressive season for the low Single-A Hagerstown Suns. In 134 games, Bautista stole 69 stolen bases, which ranked first in the South Atlantic League by a wide margin. The 69 stolen bases also would have been the most in the Carolina League, Eastern League and International League. No runner...

With the news that the Nationals have released catcher Jhonatan Solano, the best nickname in the organization is now gone. "The Onion" was let go yesterday to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, in order for the Nats to protect qualifying minor leaguers from the Rule 5 draft. I'll miss the various onion jokes that were tossed around when Solano delivered for the Nats in 2012 and 2013 - that Solano had peeled off another hit or that he was cooking up a good game. Best of luck to the...
