The Angels changed pitchers after the fifth inning tonight, and the Orioles waited until there were two outs to go about changing the score. J.J. Hardy doubled to bring home Chris Davis and give the Orioles a 1-0 lead, and Jonathan Schoop followed with a two-run homer to center field. Apparently, Schoop likes his jack on the rocks. Let's go back to Davis' at-bat against Angels reliever Mike Morin, which followed strikeouts by Adam Jones and Nelson Cruz. Davis fell behind 0-2, took a...

At times, it's very easy to forget that Manny Machado is just 22. The 2014 season has presented a number of significant challenges for the talented young third baseman, but despite the troubles, it appears that he has come through it for the better. Starting the season on the sidelines after a horrific knee injury last September, Machado's rehab took slightly longer than Orioles fans had originally hoped. When the 2013 Platinum Glove winner wasn't ready for opening day, it gave yet another...

Third baseman Manny Machado is a late scratch from the lineup tonight with lower-back tightness that cropped up during batting practice, according to the Orioles. Ryan Flaherty has replaced Machado at third base. Machado had his career-high 19-game on-base streak snapped last night. In his last 40 games since May 31, he's batting .307/.354/.523 to raise his season average from .210 to .267. Bud Norris gets hit on the foot by a comebacker last night. Zach Britton gets hit on the right arm....

Nationals right-hander Jordan Zimmermann battled through the first inning against the Rockies, and despite allowing two hits, was able to come through it unscathed. Unfortunately, the Rockies were able to get a couple of more hits in the second inning to take their first lead of the series. Ben Paulsen doubled, and one batter later, DJ LeMahieu smacked a triple down the right field line to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead. Ian Desmond has a base hit for the Nationals, but Bryce Harper was thrown...

If the Orioles can win either of the next two games, they will win this series from the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels have won a club-record 10 straight home series. Even with last night's loss to the Orioles, the Angels are 14-3 in their last 17 home games and 25-6 in their past 31. Tonight, the O's face left-hander Hector Santiago (2-7, 4.32 ERA). Santiago allows an ERA of 3.27 in the first five innings of his starts and that goes up to 9.26 from the sixth on. He is 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA...

The Orioles just announced their anticipated roster move. They optioned reliever Preston Guilmet to Triple-A Norfolk to create room for Miguel Gonzalez, who has been recalled and is starting tonight against the Angels in Anaheim. Guilmet, 26, has posted a 5.23 ERA in 10 1/3 innings with the Orioles, striking out 12 over his 10 appearances. He tossed a scoreless inning Sunday in Oakland. Guilmet has been optioned five times this season. He knows the drill. Manager Buck Showalter hinted before...

Jordan Zimmermann is set to make his first start since suffering a right biceps strain on July 11. On paper, he couldn't pick a better opponent to face for his return. In seven career starts against the Rockies, he's 5-0 with a minuscule 1.64 ERA. However, he will be throwing in tough conditions, which will make skipper Matt Williams keep a close eye on his starter. "His flat ground was good, his long toss was good, his bullpen was good. There haven't been any issues," Williams said at...

The Orioles still haven't announced today's roster move. Miguel Gonzalez is listed as their starting pitcher in Anaheim, but the lineup card still includes eight relievers. Gonzalez is being recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. Manager Buck Showalter most likely is checking on the health of a couple pitchers. If everyone is fine, Preston Guilmet figures to be optioned. Nothing interesting about the lineup. Another start in left field for Steve Pearce. Nelson Cruz remains the designated hitter....

DENVER - Seeking a series win, the Nationals will turn to right-hander Jordan Zimmermann, who is making his first start since having to leave the game early on July 11 with a right biceps strain. He managed to go just 3 1/3 innings in that start in Philadelphia before having to exit with the injury, which also caused him to miss the 2014 All-Star Game. Zimmermann will miss two of the Rockies' hottest hitters, Justin Morneau and Troy Tulowitzki, both of whom are on the disabled list. Bryce...
