Notes on the rotation, Chen and the upcoming mini-camp

I've already made an attempt to project the Orioles' lineup despite all the weeks that remain before the March 31 opener at Camden Yards. The rotation is just as tricky because executive vice president Dan Duquette is trying to acquire another starter. For now, we probably can agree that Chris Tillman, Wei-Yin Chen, Miguel Gonzalez and Bud Norris are in the rotation. The fifth spot is wide open, but as I stated yesterday on "Wall to Wall Baseball" on MASN - which re-airs tonight at 11:30...

The internet seemed to be abuzz yesterday when quotes from Bryce Harper ran in an ESPN.com story about how players try to bulk up during the offseason in order to combat the natural weight loss that occurs during a season. "I want to go into spring training about 240, 245 (lbs.)," Harper said in the story. "I'll lose about 20 pounds during the season." Various Web sites picked up the story and it quickly spread. Ah, the Internet. In reality, this is the same offseason plan that Harper...

The Orioles' primary focus right now is finding another starting pitcher. It takes precedent over a designated hitter. Unfortunately, they still don't know whether A.J. Burnett wants to pitch in 2014. The Orioles can't wait around on Burnett, the Monkton resident who turned 37 yesterday. They most definitely have interest in him, as I reported at the Winter Meetings, but they still haven't heard whether he's going to retire, stay with the Pirates or give them a chance to sign...

By now, most readers here know I grew up in the Baltimore area as an Orioles fan. I no longer go the games to cheer from the stands, but I feel lucky to have a job covering my childhood team. There are so many memories of going to so many games at Memorial Stadium. I think I spent more time there than at home during some years. The team was really good and being a young fan was great. In recent years, I seldom would get the chance to be a fan except when I would go to watch the football team...

The Orioles announced today that they've signed outfielder Quintin Berry to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Berry, 29, gives the Orioles another left-handed bat for the outfield. He also presents a much-needed stolen-base threat after Nate McLouth signed with the Nationals as a free agent. Berry is 29-for-29 in stolen base attempts, including the playoffs. He's a career .268/.339/.371 hitter in 107 games over parts of two major league seasons with the Tigers...

How do you top a championship season in which your team set a record for the top rookie-level winning percentage in more than 30 years? Take on the South Atlantic League, of course! Patrick Anderson, who guided the Gulf Coast League Nationals to a 52-9 record and a league title, now will try is hand as the new manager of the low Single-A Hagerstown Suns. "I am looking forward to it," Anderson said. "I just finished my first year with the organization and they have been unbelievable....

This is the point in the offseason when hard news is sometimes tough to come by. While there are still a handful of quality free agents out there on the market (Nelson Cruz, Kendrys Morales, Stephen Drew, Masahiro Tanaka, Matt Garza, Ervin Santana, Ubaldo Jimenez, A.J. Burnett, Grant Balfour, etc.) and there are some big contracts that have yet to be handed out, many teams have already made their most significant moves of the offseason and don't have all that much left to do. The Nationals...

We had a 10 questions blog in October and one in November. Somehow we missed December, so let's get our January version posted today. As usual, answer one, two, all 10 questions or any number that strikes you. Answer with one word or expound on your answer as much as you like. Here is the first 2014 edition of "10 questions for O's fans." 1) Who is most likely to sign a contract extension with the Orioles: Chris Davis, Matt Wieters and/or J.J. Hardy? 2) Predict the 2014 stats for Nick...

The Orioles could go in two directions regarding their bullpen. Sign a closer or move Tommy Hunter into the role and acquire another set-up man. Either way, they seem likely to add another reliever before spring training. Though they made an immediate push for free agent closer Fernando Rodney after their deal with Grant Balfour fell apart, he may be too pricy for a team that wasn't willing to pay Jim Johnson $10-$11 million in 2014. There doesn't appear to be a financial match. According...

Happy 2014, Orioles fans! After watching the O's offseason get off to an extremely slow start, I'm sure many of your New Year's resolutions include something along the lines of "Watch the Orioles make a big move." The holidays and 2013 are over, but there are still many big-name free agents available. However, in the past, the Orioles have not been aggressive when it comes to free agency. Although the Orioles are still looking for starting pitching, they do have a solid list of pitching...
