The Orioles will recall Jake Arrieta from Triple-A Norfolk this afternoon to serve as an extra bullpen arm for tonight's game against the Boston Red Sox at Camden Yards. An announcement will come later today.
Arrieta will take Kevin Gausman's spot on the 25-man roster. Gausman was optioned after last night's 13-inning game, which included six relievers being used behind him.
Arrieta hasn't pitched since Sunday, so he'd be working on normal rest if needed tonight. He's 3-3 with a 5.50...
Wednesday afternoon was a case study in frustration if you are an Orioles fan.
The Orioles faced the Los Angeles Angels and were hoping a series sweep. Despite their talent level, the Angels have been lackluster this season, but they took advantage a Baltimore pitcher during the top of the seventh inning.
The pitcher on the mound for the Orioles: Pedro Strop.
That name has caused fans to react with occasional outbursts of anger all season long.
When Strop came into the game, the Orioles...
Maybe the Nationals should start using Ross Ohlendorf and Ross Detwiler as some kind of new tag-team when they start slumping or get in trouble.
You drop below .500 and need a couple wins? Call on the Rosses.
Detwiler might not have picked up a win yesterday in the Nationals' series finale in Colorado, but he did his job in his first start back off the disabled list, allowing three runs over five innings.
The Nats' bats then woke up late, with Ryan Zimmerman and Ian Desmond each...
Matt Merullo is a positive, upbeat guy. He is also a real solid baseball man. He is also in his first year as a manager in the Orioles organization and about to lead the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds into a new season, beginning Monday night at Ripken Stadium.
He brings a lot of experience to the O's and his job in Aberbeen. He was a backup catcher in the big leagues with the White Sox, Indians and Twins. For 13 years (from 1998-2010), he was the Northeast area scouting supervisor...
This blog entry is going to shift in many directions, so buckle up or grab onto the railing.
The Orioles will announce their corresponding roster move today after optioning Kevin Gausman late last night. They have a spot open on their 40-man roster, though they'll need it for Tsuyoshi Wada once his 30-day rehab assignment ends this weekend. The plan is to put him on the 40-man and option him, with his consent, to Triple-A Norfolk.
Josh Stinson, Jair Jurrjens and Zach Britton are three...
After a game where the Orioles played 13 innings and used six bullpen pitchers, they are going to need a fresh arm for Friday's game. And to add a player to their roster for Friday's game, they optioned Kevin Gausman to Triple-A Norfolk after Thursday's game.
A corresponding roster move will be announced before Friday's game with Boston.
Gausman was in line for his first big league win tonight until the Red Sox tied the game 4-4 in the top of the seventh. He gave up two runs and six hits...
The Orioles are contemplating a roster move for Friday to add another reliever after using six in tonight's 5-4, 13-inning win over the Boston Red Sox at Camden Yards.
Brian Matusz threw 26 pitches, Tommy Hunter 21, Darren O'Day 26, Troy Patton five, Jim Johnson 10 and T.J. McFarland 16. Patton and Matusz also pitched Wednesday afternoon against the Angels.
"We didn't overextend anybody," said manager Buck Showalter. "Tommy's pitch count was down. Darren had two days off going today...
Chris Davis on the win in the opener of a big series with Boston (plus Gausman and McFarland quotes)
Of course, after a long extra-innings game with the Boston Red Sox, during an interview with Chris Davis, someone had to ask him if he thought he'd get on the mound tonight.
"Yeah, I thought about it," Davis said. "Once it gets late in extra innings, you start going through all the scenarios. Who we have on the bench, whose DHing, who would play first if I had to go in. Hopefully that is something I'll never have to do again and I can go ride off into the sunset.
"I'm not going to say...
Chris Davis' two-out bloop single into left field in the bottom of the 13th inning off Red Sox reliever Alex Wilson scored Nick Markakis and gave the Orioles a 5-4 victory before whatever remained of 20,098 at Camden Yards.
Markakis walked with two outs and Adam Jones singled to right field. Davis followed with his second run-scoring single of the night.
Rule 5 pick T.J. McFarland picked up his first major league win by retiring the Red Sox in order in the top of the 13th inning.
The game...
They won it on a bloop.
Major league homer leader Chris Davis dropped a bloop single into short left field in the last of the 13th and it scored Nick Markakis and the O's outlasted Boston 5-4 with a walkoff win in the 13th.
With two outs against Alex Wilson, Markakis walked and Adam Jones singled to right. That set the stage for the walkoff blooper by Davis and the O's victory.
Tommy Hunter kept this game tied at 4-4 and gave the O's some momentum on the mound tonight. He pitched 2 1/3...
