The Orioles today announced that they have recalled right-hander Alex Burnett from Triple-A Norfolk and placed right-hander Miguel Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 4, with a right thumb blister.
Burnett, 25, had one earlier stint with the Orioles, April 22-24, but did not appear in a game. He is 1-0 with a 0.96 ERA (9.1IP, ER) in six relief appearances for the Tides this season, with eight strikeouts and no walks. Burnett was claimed by the Orioles off waivers from...
Prior to their game against the Tampa Bay Rays next Saturday, May 18, the Orioles will host an exclusive fundraising event for Shannon's Fund, an endowment at the University of Maryland Medical Center that provides financial assistance to hospital patients in need. For $50, fans will receive a left field lower box game ticket and enjoy a pre-game party on the Roof Deck that will include visits from Brady Anderson, Mike Bordick, Dave Johnson, a current Orioles player and other former Orioles....
Jayson Werth is out of the Nationals' lineup for a fifth straight game with a tight right hamstring. Bryce Harper will play right field again in Werth's absence, and Roger Bernadina will man left field this afternoon against the Tigers.
Nationals manager Davey Johnson said that an MRI on Werth's hamstring looked good upon first glance, but team medical director Dr. Wiemi Douoguih will give the test results a more careful examination later today.
Werth has been put on antibiotics to try and...
Here is a strange stat: The Orioles have been outhit in their last three games, but won each game. Those are the O's only three wins of the season when their opponent has more hits.
Despite that, their offense continues to be productive and the Orioles rank second in the American League with 168 runs, behind only the Athletics with 177.
Who's hot at bat right now:
* Let's start with the kid. Manny Machado is batting .382 (26-for-68) and has hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games with seven...
The Orioles made a minor league trade this morning, acquiring third baseman Brandon Wood from the Kansas City Royals organization for cash considerations.
Wood, 28, will report to Triple-A Norfolk.
This move isn't an indication that the Orioles are promoting an infielder to their major league club. At least not now. It's more organizational depth.
Wood was the 23rd overall pick by the Anaheim Angels in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, but he never lived up to his lofty prospect status....
The Nats are looking good right now. They're coming off a three-game win streak with Jordan Zimmermann holding his own as team anchor and the under-.500 Chicago Cubs coming into town for a three-game series for Mother's Day weekend. With warmer temperatures on the way, school wrapping up for the kids and summer truly around the corner, now's the time to get to the ballpark ... or at least that's what my friends keep telling me.
I'm at the ballpark often enough, catching games and writing...
In August 2012, the Orioles were in the wild card hunt and desperate to solve a problem - third base. Former Oriole Mark Reynolds, despite his power, was struggling at the hot corner, and executive vice president Dan Duquette, the front office, along with manager Buck Showalter were looking for a solution.
In the middle of that month, the Orioles did something bold and head-scratching at the same time. They promoted Manny Machado from Double-A Bowie to the majors.
At first, I was bewildered...
After the Orioles had won their game last night, the result came in from Boston where Minnesota beat the Red Sox 15-8. Former Oriole Pedro Florimon knocked in a career-high three runs and help his former O's teammates move into a first-place tie with Boston at 21-13.
While the Orioles have won four in a row, Boston has lost five of its last six games.
After Chris Tillman got the win last night against Kansas City, he took some time to talk about teammate Jim Johnson, who tied Randy Myers'...
Let's have fun with some numbers for a bit.
Factoring in his outing last night in a win against the Tigers, Jordan Zimmermann has a 1.59 ERA this season, which ranks fourth in the majors behind just Matt Harvey, Felix Hernandez and Justin Verlander.
Pretty good company, if you ask me.
Zimmermann has a 0.82 WHIP, which ranks third in the bigs, and his six wins ties for the most in the league. He has six quality starts (defined as at least six innings of work and no more than three earned...
Another fantastic pitching performance from Jordan Zimmermann, another homer from Bryce Harper and another save notched by Rafael Soriano.
The Nationals picked up a 3-1 win over the Tigers tonight, with Zimmermann leading the way yet again.
Despite pitching on six days' rest and dealing with a 57-minute rain delay before first pitch, Zimmermann allowed just one run over seven innings against a Tigers team that came into today batting a robust .285.
"Well that was a good one," manager...
