The Orioles won 46 road games last season, the most in the majors, 16 more than their total in 2011 and their most since 1997 (52).
The Orioles picked up their 10th road win last night, tied with the Cardinals for most in the majors. Their road win percentage of .588 is second in the American League behind the Red Sox (9-3, .750). The Orioles, who have played the most road games with 17, are 8-3 when scoring first away from home.
It all starts with starting pitching, right? The Orioles are...
The hottest team right now among the Orioles' minor league affiliates is the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, who are 18-9, tied for first place with seven wins in a row and a have a 9-1 record over the last 10 games.
The Tides have not won eight games in a row since May 12-19, 2009 and the club record is 10 in a row, set July 23-30, 1969 - the first year the Tides were in the International League.
This is the first time Norfolk has been tied atop the International League's South Division since...
PITTSBURGH - As expected, Jayson Werth is out of the Nationals' lineup tonight a day after tweaking his hamstring in the fourth inning of the Nats' win over the Braves.
Werth left the game after four innings and was replaced by Roger Bernadina in right field. The Nats don't think that Werth will need to land on the DL, but he'll get at least today off as he tries to let that ailing hamstring heal.
This is now the third time in the Nats' last four contests that Werth has been out of the...
PITTSBURGH - It's official - the Nationals have reinstated third baseman Ryan Zimmerman from the 15-day disabled list and optioned Anthony Rendon to Double-A Harrisburg.
Zimmerman had been on the disabled list since April 18 with a left hamstring strain. He missed 14 games.
His rehab stint was a short one. Zimmerman appeared in just one game with high-A Potomac, getting three at-bats and going 0-for-3. That's apparently all he needed before feeling he was ready to return.
Zimmerman is...
The Washington Nationals today recalled from rehab and reinstated third baseman Ryan Zimmerman from the 15-Day Disabled List and optioned third baseman Anthony Rendon to Harrisburg of the Double-A Eastern League. Nationals Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
Zimmerman, 28, rejoins the Nationals after being placed on the 15-Day DL on April 21 (retroactive to April 18) with a left hamstring strain. He missed 14 games, during...
The Orioles are facing a left-hander tonight, the Angels' Jason Vargas, which could put Nate McLouth back on the bench.
Manager Buck Showalter is inclined to go with his right-handed lineup, which includes Nolan Reimold in left field and Steve Pearce as the designated hitter.
Reimold is 3-for-9 with a double and home run against Vargas. McLouth is 1-for-2 with an RBI. Pearce has never faced him.
The Orioles might want to try something different, since Vargas has posted a 2.03 ERA against...
Major League Baseball released the draft order for the 2013 First-Year Player Draft set for Thursday, June 6.
The Houston Astros will have the No. 1 overall selection. The Nationals do not have a selection in the first round this season. The Nationals forfeited that late round selection because they signed pitcher Rafael Soriano. The Yankees picked up a compensatory pick for the loss of Soriano. New York has three selections in the first round at No. 26, No. 32 and No. 33.
The pick the...
PITTSBURGH - With Ryan Zimmerman ready to come off the disabled list today after missing the last 15 days with a hamstring strain, Anthony Rendon's first taste of the major leagues has come to an end.
Rendon will return to Double-A Harrisburg's roster today, going back to the long bus rides and cramped clubhouses that minor league ball offers. But he'll go back with eight big league games and 30 plate appearances under his belt, and a sampling of what life is like on the big stage.
"It...
Chris Tillman provided the Orioles bullpen with some much-needed rest Thursday night by pitching eight shutout innings against the Angels. In the process, Tillman became only the second Orioles starter to go more than seven innings in 2013, which has left the team's relievers to carry a heavy early-season load. Coming into the game, the O's bullpen had pitched a shade more than 42 innings in the previous 13 games.
Tillman averaged 5.2 innings per outing in five starts prior to Thursday....
Redundancy isn't always a bad thing in spite of the negative connotations often associated with the word. In the case of the Washington Nationals' roster, it's actually a key to the way Nats GM Mike Rizzo, and general managers league-wide admittedly, construct their teams. The defending NL East champs have multiple closers for example. If 33-year-old veteran Rafael Soriano has had too much work, the Nationals can turn to the likes of Drew Storen, their '09 first-round pick who saved 42...
