Jets receiver Braylon Edwards was arrested this week for DWI. Knowing Edwards, the charges also will be dropped. Now, back to baseball... Did you know that Catonsville native and former major league pitcher Jeff Nelson recently bought a home in Sykesville? Well, he did. Nelson is doing some work for XM radio and MLB.com. It was nice to see Julio Lugo back in the Orioles' dugout last night. And yes, smiling. Lugo told reporters in Boston that he's been diagnosed with a "partially...

Wigginton comes up big again as O's beat Sox 9-1 at Fenway

For the third day in a row, Ty Wigginton produced the RBI that untied a game and led the Orioles to a win. Tonight at Boston, Wigginton's three-run homer in the 7th, just inside of the Pesky Pole in Fenway Park's right field, gave the O's a 4-1 lead and they beat the Red Sox, 9-1. Gary Thorne talks with Buck Showalter following the O's 9-1 win over Boston The O's have taken the first two games of the set and it's their first three-game series win at Fenway since July of 2004. The...

I really feel bad for Jonathan Papelbon. Oh wait...I actually feel the exact opposite for Jonathan Papelbon. The Orioles just tagged him for four runs on five hits in the top of the ninth, increasing their lead to 9-1. Let me type the last part of that line again: Increasing their lead to 9-1. This game is being played in Fenway Park. In September. And the Orioles are beating the Red Sox, 9-1. They can complete the sweep tomorrow night. Must be the soft part of the schedule again.
Praising hustle and power

Let's start with the hustle. Adam Jones scored all the way from first base when Boston second baseman Marco Scutaro dropped Felix Pie's pop up with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. Jones could have assumed that Scutaro would make the catch, but he ran full-speed and delivered the tying run. Maybe it's odd to praise hustle - it should be a requirement - but it seems worth noting in this instance. Not every player would have circled the bases on that play. An inning later, Ty...

Clay Buchholz was shutting down the Orioles again. He led 1-0 with a man on first and two outs in the top of the sixth when Felix Pie hit a pop up on the right side of the infield. It should have been caught by second baseman Marco Scutaro, but he missed it amidst some Fenway Park wind and the O's tied the game, 1-1 on the unearned run. Adam Jones who was on first, fortunately, ran pretty hard around the bases and scored easily when the ball dropped into short right field. The O's had...

After solid season with Suns, Hood ready for instructional league

Nationals
Destin Hood, 20, is capping off a great season in Hagerstown by playing for the Nationals instructional league team in Viera, which begins play Thursday against the Braves. The 6'1", 225-pound outfielder from Mobile, Alabama played in 129 games for the Suns, batting .285 with 30 doubles, three triples, five homers and 65 RBI, totalling 140 hits and 56 runs. Hood struggled a little bit last season (batting .246 in 38 games with Vermont) so the Nats asked him to work hard to get into baseball...

The Orioles may be on the road right now, but Camden Yards is still hosting some ballplayers for the next two weeks. The O's were not able to have their normal instructional league for minor leaguers this year due to the field and stadium renovations going on in Sarasota. So they have brought 15 minor leaguers to Baltimore where, beginning this past Monday, they are getting daily individual and team work with drills, instruction and teaching from six coaches. Players including Manny...

When we last left Jake Arrieta, he was prepared to undergo surgery tomorrow to have a bone spur removed from his right elbow. Now he's getting a second opinion from orthopedic specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum. Arrieta told reporters in Boston yesterday that he's leaning toward not having the procedure, though it's relatively simple in nature and gives him plenty of time to recover. I don't get it. Yocum will take a look at the MRI results and offer his opinion, which usually carries a lot of...
