The Orioles today announced that they have selected the contract of RHP Armando Gabino from Triple-A Norfolk and placed RHP David Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain. Gabino, 26, was 7-0 with two saves and a 2.12 ERA (76.1IP, 18ER) in 27 games (seven starts) for the Tides. He was named the Organizational Pitcher of the Month for July after going 3-0 with a save and a 1.23 ERA (22.0IP, 3ER) in eight games (two starts). Hernandez is 4-3 with two saves and a 3.29 ERA...

The Angels have gotten two balls out of the infield in four innings and still don't have a baserunner. Jake Arrieta has struck out three and fielded three tappers to the mound. Arrieta needed only seven pitches to complete the fourth, raising his total to a whopping 45. He struck out Erick Aybar on a 93 mph fastball to start the inning. Instant update: Arrieta retired the first two batters in the fifth inning on two pitches before Alberto Callaspo doubled to right. Nick Markakis made a...

Troy Patton remembers July 28 with great fondness. It's the last time he pitched. Patton started that night for Triple-A Norfolk, going 5 2/3 innings in a victory over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He's back with the Orioles and back in the bullpen, still waiting for a call that hasn't arrived. The Orioles are saving Patton for long relief, but the starters have been working deeper in games lately. That's a good thing. It's also a bad thing if you're the long reliever - though Patton isn't...

Right-hander Armando Gabino joined the O's today to take the roster spot of David Hernandez, who went on the DL. The 26-year-old native of the Dominican was 7-0, 2.12 with two saves at Norfolk in 27 games with seven starts. He allowed just 55 hits in 76 1/3 with 20 walks, 68 strikeouts and a .199 average against. "I am so excited. I found out last night about 11:30. Our manager told me. We were supposed to go to Louisville at five in the morning. But he said you are going to...

During the early stages of last night's game, the MASN cameras captured a dugout conversation between Buck Showalter and O's catcher Matt Wieters. Today, both revealed they were discussing a situation from the top of the first inning when the Angels had runners on first and third with two outs and Torii Hunter stole second. The O's did not throw to second base to attempt to get Hunter out. The new manager and the young catcher discussed that situation and what could happen in a similar...

Buck Showalter needs two more wins to pass Don Zimmer for sole possession for 64th place on the all-time list. That subject didn't come up today. Brian Roberts is in the lineup, but Showalter will monitor him in batting practice. "So far, so good," Showalter said. "It looks like he's a go." Showalter wanted to make sure that he started Corey Patterson tonight, and it became easier with Josh Bell on the bench. Ty Wigginton moves to third base, Luke Scott plays first and the DH slot...

Pitcher David Hernandez officially went on the disabled list this afternoon, a move that he was pretty sure was coming. "Today it was a little more sore than yesterday, so they put me on the disabled list. "Richie (Bancells) told me it's seven to ten days at the earliest so they are going to send me down to Sarasota and I assume, throw in a game or two down there and then, as far as I know, I should be ready." Hernandez sprained his left ankle covering home plate in the seventh inning...

David Hernandez will stay with the team through the homestand before flying down to Sarasota and appearing in a few games. He expects to be ready when he's eligible to come off the disabled list on Aug. 20. Josh Bell is available tonight. The cramping in his left hamstring is being blamed on dehydration. The same thing happened in Boston. Armando Gabino can pitch in a variety of roles, since he's started and been used in relief. He'll pick up a ball when the bullpen phone rings. "He's...

The Orioles have announced that they'll honor Jim Gentile in a special on-field ceremony before tomorrow night's game against the Chicago White Sox at Camden Yards. In 1961, Gentile set career highs with a .302 average, 46 homers and 141 RBIs. He finished one RBI behind league-leader Roger Maris, until a baseball researcher discovered several years ago that Maris was credited with an RBI on an error. Major League Baseball recently verified and approved the research, and Gentile appears in...
