Updating Bryce Harper's big weekend, I interviewed Matt Youmans of the Las Vegas Review-Journal on "Nats Insider" on Federal News Radio Sunday.
Youmans was at the NJCAA Western District Finals in Lamar, Colorado. Harper's team, the College of Southern Nevada, won the tourney 25-11 Saturday over Central Arizona College.
True to form, 17-year-old catcher continued to rewrite the record books for his team, which plays for the JUCO national title starting Saturday in Grand Junction,...
Adam Jones talked about the ball that Roger Bernadina hit with the bases-loaded that turned into a triple and gave Washington a 3-1 lead in the first inning.
"Missed the ball. Just missed the ball," he said.
"I mean, there's no elaboration. Just didn't come up with it. You either catch it or you don't. I didn't. You're supposed to make that play. Just like Nyjer (Morgan) was supposed to catch that ball yesterday, I was supposed to catch this one today. It happens.
"(Kevin) Millwood...
Alfredo Simon said he felt "a little pop" in his hamstring before leaving the game in the 10th inning.
"I just tried to run hard to the base. We'll see how fast I can recover," he said.
"I think it'll be good in a couple of days, maybe just a week."
The Orioles can't go that long without him, so they could be placing two relievers on the disabled list before Tuesday's game.
Though manager Dave Trembley said Simon was injured while reaching for Luke Scott's throw, I thought I...
Orioles manager Dave Trembley was seething after the game. He tried to hold it together and finally cut short the interview session by saying, "That's about it."
No, that was it.
"A lot of things happened in the game that have been repetitive, but the intent to play hard, to come back, the things that are very apparent, speak for themselves," he said.
That's a good thing, because Trembley wasn't in the mood to talk.
Asked about Corey Patterson's failure to tag up and go to third on...
Alfredo Simon strained his left hamstring while reaching for Luke Scott's throw to first base.
The injury occurred to the upper part of his leg. It's not known how long he'll be sidelined.
For those of you keeping score at home, the Orioles have lost two closers (Mike Gonzalez and Alfredo Simon), one set-up man (Jim Johnson) and one seventh-inning reliever (Koji Uehara).
Does it seem like the Orioles don't have much luck sometimes?
Alfredo Simon retired all four batters he faced in Washington today. He got a ground out to start the last of the tenth, but while running to cover first base on that grounder, seemed to strain a hamstring and had to leave the game.
Cla Meredith came on and faced Josh Willingham. The count reached 2-1 and then Meredith left a pitch up in the zone and Willingham hit it out to left center for a game-winning homer as the Nats...
Just what the Orioles didn't need.
Closer Alfredo Simon pulled up while covering first base in the bottom of the 10th, bringing head athletic trainer Richie Bancells and manager Dave Trembley from the dugout.
Simon kept holding his left hip. He limped off the field with Bancells at his side.
Simon retired all four batters he faced, and the Nationals couldn't get the ball out of the infield. He induced a sharp grounder to first from former Oriole Willie Harris to open the 10th, and Luke...
I was crafting another entry detailing the Orioles' ninth inning rally and how they fell short against Nats closer Matt Capps. I was expressing disappointment in Matt Wieters' at-bat with runners on second and third and one out, how a weak ground ball to the right side felt empty despite scoring a run.
Then Julio Lugo made me hit the delete button.
Lugo's two-out single off Capps tied the game, 3-3, and brought us to the bottom of the ninth.
Lugo was 0-for-3 and hadn't gotten the ball...
The O's and Nats, who play a lot of close games, are now in the tenth inning at Washington tied 3-3.
The Orioles scored two runs in the ninth off Matt Capps, who had been 16 for 16 in save situations. He came on to protect a 3-1 lead in the ninth. With one out, Luke Scott reached on an infield single and Adam Jones doubled to right. A Matt Wieters grounder scored a run to make it 3-2 and Julio Lugo blooped an RBI single to right with two outs to tie the game.
Alfredo Simon pitched a 1-2-3...
Kevin Millwood made it to the seventh inning, but he couldn't finish it.
That's pretty deep in the game, but not quite as far as manager Dave Trembley had hoped.
Millwood threw 113 pitches in 6 1/3, but all the scoring off him took place in the first on that bases-loaded triple. He turned in another quality start unless Will Ohman allows Ryan Zimmerman to score. He'll remain winless on the year.
Millwood surrendered eight hits, walked one - the last batter he faced on an extremely close...
