Nationals agree to terms with Alcides Escobar

The Washington Nationals agreed to terms on a one-year contract with infielder Alcides Escobar on Tuesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Escobar, 34, hit .288 with 21 doubles, two triples, four homers, 28 RBI, 17 walks, 53 runs scored and three stolen bases in 75 games for the Nationals. He joined the Nationals on July 3rd and from that point through the end of the season, ranked on the club in doubles (1st, 21), hits (1st, 92), and batting average with runners in scoring position (2nd, .379). Among National League hitters, his 21 doubles were tied for fifth while his 92 hits and his .379 average with runners in scoring position ranked sixth since July 3.

Escobar reached base safely in 18 straight games to cap the 2021 season. The 18-game streak is the third-longest streak of his career and his longest on-base streak since Aug. 23-Sept. 13, 2016 (20 G). He hit safely in 16 of his last 18 games, going 28-for-81 (.346) with seven doubles, two homers, 10 RBI, seven walks, one stolen base and 12 runs scored.

The 2021 season marked Escobar's 12th Major League season. He's hit .259 with 245 doubles, 56 triples, 45 home runs, 470 RBI, 248 walks, 177 stolen bases and 658 runs scored in 1,512 Major League games.
