Nationals select 10 players on third day of MLB's 2021 First-Year Player Draft

The Washington Nationals selected ten players on the third day of Major League Baseball's 2021 First-Year Player Draft. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo, Assistant General Manager & Vice President of Scouting Operations Kris Kline and Director of Scouting Operations Eddie Longosz made the joint announcement.

The Nationals selected right-handed pitcher Marc Davis out of Florida Southwestern State College in the 11th round. Davis went 4-1 with two saves and a 3.34 ERA in 17 games (five starts) in 2021. He struck out 64 batters and allowed just 23 hits in 35.0 innings pitched. His 16.36 strikeouts per 9.0 innings ranked second among all Junior College pitchers. In his three collegiate seasons, Davis struck out 139 batters in 86.0 innings across 44 career appearances.

In the 12th round, Washington selected left-handed pitcher Andrew Alvarez out of California Polytechnic State University. As a senior in 2021, Alvarez went 7-3 with a 4.08 ERA in 16 games (14 starts) and 81 strikeouts en route to being named All-Big West honorable mention.

With their 13th-round pick, the Nationals selected Clemson (SC) University right-handed pitcher Mack Anglin. In his sophomore season in 2021, Anglin struck out 75 batters in 56.1 innings pitched. He went 2-6 with a 3.99 ERA in 13 games (eight starts).

Washington selected left-handed pitcher Erik Tolman out of Arizona State University in the 14th round. Tolman went 2-0 with a 4.05 ERA in three games (three starts) during his junior season in 2021.

In the 15th round, the Nationals selected their first position player of the day, taking outfielder Jaden Fein from San Diego State University. The sophomore was a Second Team All-Mountain West selection, and was named to both the 2021 Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list and the 2021 Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger of the Year watch list. Fein hit .389/.456/.553 with 19 doubles, four homers, 53 RBI, 16 walks, eight stolen bases and 47 runs scored in 46 games in 2021. As a freshman in 2019, Fein was named Mountain West co-Freshman of the Year and a Freshman All-America by Collegiate Baseball. He was San Diego State's first Freshman of the Year since current Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg won the award in 2007.

With their 16th-round pick, the Nationals selected right-handed pitcher Jack Sinclair from the University of Central Florida. Sinclair went 5-5 with a 4.77 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 17 games (13 starts) during his junior season in 2021. Prior to the cancellation of the 2020 season, Sinclair posted a 1.35 ERA (2 ER/13.1 IP) with 20 strikeouts in eight appearances out of the bullpen.

Washington selected right-handed pitcher Brendan Collins from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro in the 17th round. In his lone season at UNC-Greensboro, Collins went 3-3 with a 5.54 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 16 games (14 starts) in 2021. Collins began his collegiate career at Brunswick (NC) Community College and Radford (VA) University before transferring to UNC-Greensboro.

The Nationals selected Auburn (AL) University catcher Steven Williams in the 18th round. The versatile Williams appeared in 48 games during his senior season, spending time at catcher (20 G), right field (20 G), left field (4 G) and designated hitter (2 G). He hit .247 with nine doubles, one triple, 13 home runs, 36 RBI, 28 walks and 38 runs scored in 2021. For his career, he clubbed 36 home runs in three seasons, tied for sixth-most in school history.

In the 19th round, the Nationals selected right-handed pitcher Riggs Threadgill from McLennan Community College in Waco, TX. In his sophomore season, Threadgill struck out 53 batters in 46.1 innings pitched. He went 4-3 with a 6.80 ERA in 16 games (10 starts) in 2021.

The Nationals concluded Day 3 by selecting catcher Elie Kligman from Cimarron-Memorial High School in Las Vegas, NV. Kligman hit .400 with four doubles, 11 RBI and six runs scored in 13 games during his senior high school season.

Over the three days of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, the Nationals selected 20 players: six right-handed pitchers, four left-handed pitchers, two catchers, four infielders and four outfielders. Of Washington's 20 selections, 14 came from four-year universities, two from junior colleges and four from the high school ranks.
