A couple of notes from Delmarva

A couple of notes from Delmarva
The Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds play their 15th game of the new season tonight at Augusta trying to snap a four-game losing streak that has dropped their record to 5-9. The Birds have given up 41 runs over those four games. The Shorebirds lost a wild one, 11-10 at Augusta in 10 innings last night in a game that featured 21 runs, 28 hits and nine errors. During this losing streak, the Delmarva bullpen has allowed 17 earned runs and 27 hits over 14 innings. Tonight, Scott Copeland (1-0, 4.50)...

Gregg will be a key to the Orioles bullpen

Gregg will be a key to the Orioles bullpen
While Kevin Gregg may have already fallen out of favor with some fans, I'm sure Orioles manager Buck Showalter looks at the situation differently, He knows Gregg will be an important piece in his bullpen and that he has to get him right. Showalter has to help him to start pitching well. Maybe last night was a start. Despite a loud out that ended the game, Gregg did pitch a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his second O's save in three chances. He got the job done, even if the fans' hearts...

Second look at second guesses

Second look at second guesses
After scoring 20 runs during their eight-game losing streak, the Orioles have totaled 16 in the last two nights. That's why it doesn't pay to panic. It's a 162-game season. The bats were bound to heat up. Nick Markakis went 2-for-4 after falling into a 1-for-20 slump. Vladimir Guerrero became the first Oriole to homer in consecutive games. Just when I started to get used to Matt Wieters producing loud outs and looping base hits, he's now producing loud hits. He's driving the ball with...

Some postgame notes after the O's latest win

Some postgame notes after the O's latest win
Checking in with some notes after the Orioles' 5-4 win over Minnesota. Matt at bat: Matt Wieters drove in one run in the first game of the series Monday, then had four RBIs Tuesday and two more last night. Over the three games of this series, he is 4-for-9 with a double, two homers and seven RBIs. Wieters' six RBIs over his last two games is more than he had in his first 13 games, when he drove in a total of five runs. Wieters has a four-game hitting streak and has homered three times on...

More postgame chatter

More postgame chatter
Zach Britton is the latest Oriole to be slowed by flu-like symptoms, but he took the ball tonight and turned in his third quality start in four outings. Zach Britton recaps his outing against the Twins Wednesday night "It could have been better," he said. "I wasn't happy with the walks, especially with the 5-1 lead and you put guys on base and it ends up being a close game like that, so I wasn't happy with the wildness. But we scored a lot of runs and kept us in the game. "I'm...

Postgame Showalter

Postgame Showalter
Manager Buck Showalter had no doubt that Denard Span's fly ball with two outs in the ninth would stay on the right side of the fence. He just wasn't sure whether it would actually hit the fence. "I thought at the very worst it would be off the wall," Showalter said following the Orioles' 5-4 victory over the Twins. "I'm glad he didn't hit it two hours earlier. The ball was flying. It was a weird wind earlier, so we were fortunate." Buck Showalter meets with the media to discuss the...

Heath Bintliff: How Britton's start stacks up to other O's southpaws

Heath Bintliff: How Britton's start stacks up to other O's southpaws
Orioles rookie southpaw Zach Britton moved his record to 3-1 last night as the Orioles narrowly beat the Twins 5-4. Britton gave up three runs over his six innings, giving him three quality starts over his first four career starts. I was curious how Britton's hot start compared to other Oriole lefty starters throughout franchise history. Here's how Britton stacks up to their first four starts (or significant relief appearances, since some of these guys pitched under Earl Weaver, you...

Two in a row: O's post narrow win over Twins

Two in a row: O's post narrow win over Twins
The Orioles didn't get any runs after the third inning tonight, but they got just enough by then to win and they've now posted back-to-back victories after an eight-game losing streak. Matt Wieters hit a two-run homer and Zach Britton picked up his third win as the Orioles edged Minnesota, 5-4, to improve to 8-9 on the year. It was just the second one-run game the Orioles have played this season and their first win. Kevin Gregg, who had allowed three runs in his last two games, picked up...

Gregg saves the night

Gregg saves the night
Kevin Gregg entered in the ninth inning with the Orioles ahead, 5-4. Save situation. He's the closer. Gregg ran the count to 3-1 on leadoff hitter Steve Holm and induced a pop up in front of the mound. The crowd cheered. Yes, cheered. Matt Tolbert stepped to the plate and fell behind, 1-2. More applause. Tolbert swung through an 84 mph splitter for the second out. The ovation grew louder. Fans rose to their feet and kept cheering. Denard Span took a ball, fouled off a 93 mph fastball...

Johnson removed after one inning (updated)

Johnson removed after one inning (updated)
Jim Johnson retired the Twins in order in the top of the seventh on only eight pitches, six of them strikes. He got two ground balls and struck out Denard Span. With the Orioles clinging to a two-run lead, I would have let Johnson pitch the eighth, as well. And a few reporters here are in agreement. However, Koji Uehara has entered the game, and you have to figure that Kevin Gregg will pitch the ninth if it's a save situation. Gregg hasn't turned in a clean outing in five tries, and he...

Choosing between Andino and Izturis (updated)

Choosing between Andino and Izturis (updated)
Derrek Lee dug out another ball in the dirt tonight, sparing Robert Andino a throwing error. Lee crouched and backhanded the ball in a sweeping motion. Sir Smooth. I asked manager Buck Showalter earlier today if he had a tough decision choosing between Robert Andino and Cesar Izturis. Andino had reached base nine times in his last 10 at-bats. Izturis was 3-for-7 with two RBIs lifetime against Twins starter Nick Blackburn. "Yes and no," he replied. "Every day's a little different. What are...

Wieters rakes with RISP (updated)

Wieters rakes with RISP (updated)
It happened again. Orioles catcher Matt Wieters stepped to the plate in the second inning with a runner in scoring position and launched a home run to center field off Twins starter Nick Blackburn, increasing the Orioles' lead to 4-1. Wieters is now 6-for-6 with a double, two home runs and 10 RBIs with RISP this season. Adam Jones' two-run double gave the Orioles a 2-1 lead. Mark Reynolds flied out, and Wieters produced a big fly. Zach Britton got a big 6-4-3 double play to end the top of...

Schoop's hit streak for Delmarva

Schoop's hit streak for Delmarva
Delmarva Shorebirds infielder Jonathan Schoop, a 19-year-old from Curacao, takes a seven-game hitting streak into tonight's game at Augusta. Schoop, who went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI last night, is batting .467 during the streak with 14 hits over 30 at bats and just three strikeouts in that stretch. His play has been a bit overshadowed by Manny Machado's South Atlantic League rookie season, but the youngster is off to a good start. He is second on the club in batting and slugging. By the way, his...

Matusz and Hardy updates

Matusz and Hardy updates
As if you haven't received enough already... Brian Matusz is scheduled to throw off flat ground from 120 feet on Friday, take Saturday off and throw from 120 feet again on Sunday. Assuming there are no setbacks, he could throw a bullpen session early next week at Camden Yards. Matusz would throw at least two bullpen sessions before the Orioles consider sending him on an injury-rehab assignment in the minors. Right now, they seem more inclined to take him on the road after the current...

Britton takes the ball as O's starters hope to get on a roll

Britton takes the ball as O's starters hope to get on a roll
When the Orioles got off to that 6-1 start, they were getting brilliant starting pitching. While they can't expect it to be like that a lot, they can hope as the games start coming every day now, that their rotation can get into a little groove, stay healthy and start cranking out more solid outings. Over the first seven games, when the O's did go 6-1, they had five quality starts. Over the last nine games, during a 1-8 run, they have had four quality starts. Zach Britton makes his fourth...

Pregame notes and Showalter quotes

Pregame notes and Showalter quotes
The Orioles snapped an eight-game losing streak last night with 11 runs after scoring a total of 10 in their previous four games. According to Elias, over the last 50 years, the only other team to end a losing streak of eight or more games with a shutout win of 11-0 or more was the 1993 San Francisco Giants, who beat the Cincinnati Reds, 13-0, on Sept. 17. After beginning the year 33-158 (.209) with 14 RBIs when batting with two outs, the Orioles went 8-16 and scored 11 runs (10 RBIs) with...

Wieters delievers clutch hits as his bat gets going

Wieters delievers clutch hits as his bat gets going
Here is an impressive stat for O's catcher Matt Wieters: After driving in four runs last night, he is now 5-for-5 on the season hitting with runners in scoring position. Four of the hits, including two last night, came with two outs. He has a double, homer and eight RBIs with RISP. That's very solid stuff for Wieters. The switch-hitter recently made an adjustment to his batting stance and is now standing more upright in the box than he was for some of the season's earlier games. "I just...

Matusz coming to Baltimore tomorrow

Matusz coming to Baltimore tomorrow
Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz will join the Orioles at Camden Yards tomorrow, take the day off and throw Friday on flat ground or in the bullpen. It's another step in the right direction for Matusz, who has been rehabbing his strained left intercostal muscle at the minor league complex in Sarasota. The Orioles have three options with Matusz next week. He can return to Twin Lakes Park, accompany them on a road trip that begins April 29 in Chicago or go on an injury rehabilitation...

Andino stays in lineup
Robert Andino has reached base in nine of his last 10 plate appearances, and he'll stay in the lineup tonight. Cesar Izturis is 3-for-7 with two RBIs lifetime against Twins starter Nick Blackburn, but Andino gets the nod. He's never faced Blackburn. Here's the lineup: Brian Roberts 2B Nick Markakis RF Derrek Lee 1B Vladimir Guerrero DH Luke Scott LF Adam Jones CF Mark Reynolds 3B Matt Wieters C Robert Andino SS Zach Britton LHP

Nick note

Nick note
If fans are going to be concerned about any struggling Orioles hitters, probably the guy that should be last on that list is Nick Markakis. I'm pretty sure the hits will be coming soon. But for now, Markakis is slumping. He had six hits in the season's first four games and has had six hits in the 12 games since. He has just one hit over his last 20 at-bats as his average has dropped from .268 to its current .197. He is batting just .128 over the last 12 games. Markakis, who hit .284...
