Game 2 drama and trauma (and attendance)

Game 2 drama and trauma (and attendance)
Jake Arrieta is charged with eight runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings, with two walks and five strikeouts. He threw 77 pitches, 50 for strikes. Arrieta's ERA jumps to 8.68. J.J. Hardy left the game after two innings with a strained left oblique muscle, an injury that usually leads to a stay on the disabled list. So much for that feel-good vibe from Game 1. Brian Roberts needed some assistance from assistant athletic trainer Brian Ebel after apparently getting some dirt in his eye, but he...

One final case of Manny being Manny

One final case of Manny being Manny
Manny Ramirez is one of the best right-handed hitters in history, but that's not how he's going to be remembered. Manny should be putting the finishing touches on a Hall of Fame career, but he's never going to have a plaque in Cooperstown. Ramirez has retired from the Rays after it was reported that Major League Baseball was suspending him for 100 games for violating the sport's drug policy. Ramirez has already served a 50-game suspension with the Dodgers for using steroids. Manny has a...

Couple of quick notes from game one

Couple of quick notes from game one
Passing along a few stats coming out of the O's game one win over Texas. The Orioles were 2-for-4 in the win when batting with runners in scoring position. Their team average in that stat actually increased from .421 to .429. The O's are 18-for-42 on the year with RISP. Mark Reynolds had two hits, including a three-run homer. He now has 6 RBI over his last two games and 8 on the year. He is now batting 5-for-7 on the season, an average of .714, with runners in scoring position. He has...

Hardy leaves game (with 2 updates)

Hardy leaves game (with 2 updates)
J.J. Hardy lasted one at-bat before coming out of Game 2. Hardy has been bothered by tightness in his lower left ribcage area. He appeared to be in pain after swinging at a pitch, and struck out looking to end the second inning. Robert Andino moved from left field to shortstop. Felix Pie took over in left. Hardy could be a candidate for the disabled list, though we might hear "day-to-day" after the game. Perhaps he'll sit out tomorrow's series finale and gain another day of rest on...

Britton talks about outing

Britton talks about outing
Zach Britton didn't get rattled on the mound today, and he kept the same composure in the interview room. Maybe he'll crack a smile later tonight. Britton was all business today, shutting out the Rangers on four hits over 7 2/3 innings. He must have left his nerves back in Clearwater. "I felt pretty good," he said. Is it getting easier? Zach Britton comments on his shutout performance as the Orioles defeat the Rangers, 5-0 "Yeah, definitely," he said. "Getting that first one out...

Texas manager Ron Washington on his team's first loss and Zach Britton

Texas manager Ron Washington on his team's first loss and Zach Britton
After his team suffered its first loss of the 2011 season after a 6-0 start, Texas manager Ron Washington said the O's just outplayed his squad in their 5-0 win in game one of a doubleheader. "We just got beat today," Washington said. "I wouldn't say we lost, I'd say they beat us. You lose it if you are out there throwing balls all around, but they beat us. "They got a big three-run bomb. Markakis got them on the board in the beginning and that young kid (Zach Britton), he made the...

Britton now 2-0 as O's blank Texas to go to 6-1

Britton now 2-0 as O's blank Texas to go to 6-1
Zach Britton's second major league start was even better than his first. After allowing one run against Tampa in a victorious debut, today Britton did not allow a run as the Orioles beat Texas 5-0 in game one of the twin bill at the Yard. Britton did not allow a hit through 4 1/3 and pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings vs. the Rangers. He gave up four hits with three walks and two strikeouts. He is now 2-0 with an ERA of 0.66. He has given up just one run through 13 2/3 frames. Britton threw 103...

Britton doing this against a very good hitting linuep

Britton doing this against a very good hitting linuep
It's one thing to pitch well against any major league team, but Zach Britton is having a great outing vs. a very good hitting and unbeaten Texas team. The Rangers entered today with 42 runs scored in six games, a major-league leading slugging percentage of .603, a team batting average of .284 and team OPS of .957. Not chopped liver. He is doing this aginst a Texas team that entered today having not even trailed in a game since the second inning last Saturday vs. Boston. He has now pitched...

Bullish on Britton (updated)

Bullish on Britton (updated)
It's hard to believe that 84 players were drafted ahead of Zach Britton in 2006. The Orioles took Billy Rowell in the first round, Pedro Beato in the supplemental round and Ryan Adams in the second round. They grabbed Britton in the third. The Rangers have barely touched him tonight through the fifth. Their only baserunners have come on walks to Mike Napoli and Elvis Andrus, and Nelson Cruz's one-out single in the fifth that broke up the rookie's no-hit bid. Britton has faced only one...

Reynolds rapped one

Reynolds rapped one
Third baseman Mark Reynolds continues to get big hits in the early going for the Orioles. His key two-run double Thursday night provided the O's with a three-run lead. Today, he blasted a second inning, three-run homer to provide Zach Britton with an early 4-0 cushion vs. unbeaten Texas. Reynolds' first O's homer traveled 422 feet to left. He is known for hitting some tape-measure shots. His last homer came August 31st for the Diamondbacks versus San Diego. Reynolds now ties Brian Roberts...

Just what the manager ordered (updated)

Just what the manager ordered (updated)
Buck Showalter needs his starters to work deep into both ends of this doubleheader. Zach Britton is off to a good start. Britton needed only six pitches to complete the top of the first inning. Ian Kinsler flied to center, and Elvis Andrus and Josh Hamilton bounced to first. Britton covered the bag for the final out. Six pitches, four strikes. And a fastball that reached 94 mph. Good to see. Nick Markakis gave Britton a 1-0 lead with his first home run. The ball landed on the flag court in...

When the ninth inning comes, Gregg wants the ball

When the ninth inning comes, Gregg wants the ball
At this point, it may be a somewhat safe assumption that Kevin Gregg is the O's closer. He has the club's only save this year. Manager Buck Showalter doesn't seem to want to publicly anoint anyone for that role and he has a few options for the ninth inning. Gregg said that is fine with him. "We pitch when we are told to pitch. Buck and Mark (Connor) make the decision as to when we come into the games. Pretty simple," Gregg said. The right-hander saved 37 of 43 games for Toronto last...

Thoughts and observations about the early days of the season

Thoughts and observations about the early days of the season
The Yankees need inconsistent pitcher A.J. Burnett to be consistent, and so far, thanks to an improved changeup, Burnett has won his first two starts. Also, catcher Russell Martin has made a good impression. No need to worry about the slow starts of Orioles first baseman Derrek Lee, or his Nationals counterpart, Adam LaRoche. Each is making good contact. Lee, hitting. 182 after being out a good chunk of March, is in late-spring training mode. LaRoche, who hit a game-winning home run Thursday,...

Roberts and Showalter speak

Roberts and Showalter speak
Just not at the same time. Brian Roberts didn't really elaborate on the stomach pains that caused him to be scratched from last night's lineup and undergo tests at a local hospital. He's just glad to be in the lineup for Game 1. "Everything's fine," he said. "I haven't been feeling great for a couple days and the doctor just a little while before the game wanted me to go get checked out." Asked if he was given a diagnosis, Roberts replied, "Nothing really. I was just having some...

Jakubauskas gets activated, awaits his first O's appearance

Jakubauskas gets activated, awaits his first O's appearance
Chris Jakubauskas is back in the major leagues. This time he wants to stick around longer than 12 pitches. Jakubauskas was officially recalled today by the Birds as Brad Bergesen was sent back to Triple-A. He will possibly be the starting pitcher tomorrow, but that plan could get foiled if the O's need to use him in either of the two games here today. "All I've been told is (I'm the) emergency arm for tonight and tomorrow will be handled later tonight, probably after the game I'll find...

Jakubauskas here, Bergesen headed to minors (updated)

Jakubauskas here, Bergesen headed to minors (updated)
The Orioles didn't wait until the conclusion of Game 1 to make a roster move. Brad Bergesen has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, and Chris Jakubauskas takes his place on the 25-man roster after having his contract purchased this morning. The Orioles didn't need a corresponding move involving the disabled list because Jakubauskas wasn't on the 40-man roster. Jakubauskas most likely will start tomorrow against the Rangers, with Jeremy Guthrie pushed back to Tuesday in New York. However,...

Roberts update

Roberts update
The tests on Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts came back negative. No appendicitis, nothing serious. A team official confirmed that Roberts has been cleared to play. Roberts won't need to go on the disabled list and could return to the lineup for today's doubleheader against the Rangers at Camden Yards. It depends how he's feeling when he arrives at the ballpark. I'll obviously have more information when I get to Camden Yards around 1 p.m. Roberts was scratched from last night's...

Ripken having '89 flashbacks

Ripken having '89 flashbacks
I'm rushing around this morning, which seems to be my usual routine, but I wanted to post some comments from Cal Ripken before getting ready for the Wall to Wall Baseball show on MASN - I'm on the air from 11 a.m. to noon - and the doubleheader at Camden Yards. Who needs sleep? We'll find out later today if Brian Roberts' stomach pains were a virus or something more serious that could put him on the disabled list and free up a spot for a reliever if the bullpen is stretched too thin. A...
