Tyler Wells placed on injured list

The Orioles placed starter Tyler Wells on the 15-day injured list this morning with lower left side discomfort. Wells is undergoing further testing today, which should provide a more specific diagnosis.

Wells’ placement on the IL was anticipated. The exact nature of the injury remains unknown beyond the pain he experienced last night in his side and lower back.

A slider thrown down and away to Tampa Bay’s Yandy Díaz to begin an at-bat in the fifth inning led to Wells’ departure from a 6-4, 10-inning loss.

The Orioles need a starter for Monday in Texas. They optioned left-hander Nick Vespi after last night’s game and recalled relievers Logan Gillaspie and Beau Sulser from Triple-A Norfolk this morning.

Nothing that solves the Monday riddle.

Wells’ ERA rose from 3.69 to 3.90 last night after he allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings. He surrendered 15 runs and 23 hits in 19 innings in his last four starts and said last night that his body’s been “kind of tight as of late, as far as just hips, back.”

His 20 starts are one behind veteran Jordan Lyles, who takes the mound today, for most on the club. His 94 2/3 innings are well beyond the 57 he totaled in 2021.

Wells is going to miss at least two starts.

Vespi tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings last night.

Sulser has made two appearances with the Orioles and allowed two runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. He’s posted a 4.13 ERA in 10 games with Norfolk.

Gillapsie made his major league debut earlier this summer and has registered a 4.35 ERA in 10 1/3 innings. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since June 13.

Gillaspie has a 4.42 ERA in 10 games with Norfolk.

Mike Mussina, Ubaldo Jiménez and Mike Devereaux have been added to the guest list for the Orioles’ 30th anniversary celebration at Camden Yards that begins Aug. 5. Chris Davis is a late scratch, however, due to a conflict in his schedule.
