SAN FRANCISCO - The Nationals are in position to sweep the Giants this afternoon, so that perhaps gives Davey Martinez a little leeway with his lineup, perhaps not feeling the need to overwork guys with a quick turnaround to today's 12:45 p.m. local first pitch.
That means we've got a bit of a new look here today. It's Asdrúbal Cabrera making his first start for the Nationals in five years, playing second base. And it's Gerardo Parra, who started last night in right field, at first base...
Fans are invited to attend "Camden Vineyards," at Oriole Park on Saturday, September 7, prior to the 7:05 p.m. ET game against the Texas Rangers.
A limited number of ticket packages are available for $75, which include a ticket to the game, along with access to Camden Vineyards in the bullpen picnic area. The pregame event will feature wine tasting of 20 wines from 11 different countries, along with light fare, and an exclusive Camden Vineyards wine glass. Offerings will include red and white...
The onslaught of homers by Orioles opponents just keeps coming. The New York Yankees bashed five homers in beating the Orioles Monday night and then hit six more last night.
Here are some numbers that further quantify the O's inability to keep the ball in the park this series and this season.
* The Orioles have now allowed five or more home runs 16 times on the season and four times over the last eight games. They've allowed six or more six times and seven or more twice.
* In this series,...
SAN FRANCISCO - The Nationals knew they were getting an offensive-minded catcher when they signed Kurt Suzuki over the winter. So they aren't exactly surprised by the production they've gotten out of the 35-year-old veteran this season.
But they're also making sure they appreciate it.
"He's been awesome, really has," manager Davey Martinez said. "And not just his hitting. The way he's been calling games. His leadership in the clubhouse. Everything about him has been really, really good....
SAN FRANCISCO - The formula sounds simple enough. Get a quality start from the guy on the mound. Get some big hits to seize an early lead. Turn things over to the bullpen to close out a victory.
For the better part of four months, the Nationals didn't have enough of the right ingredients to concoct that formula. Most notably, the bullpen pieces.
Now that they do have a relief corps with more than one or two trusted arms, the Nats are perfectly capable of winning games like tonight's 5-3...
Manager Brandon Hyde has been scrambling to learn about the players in the organization since he took the job. There's the minicamp in January, phone calls, spring training, plane rides, office visits and the rhythm of a season.
It also works in reverse.
Players are getting to know Hyde, a first-time manager who coached in the National League. His moods and how he communicates. What he demands - like running hard up the line, a message delivered again Monday - and how he's got their backs in...
The New York Yankees hit more homers at Camden Yards. They took an early lead. The Orioles came back. But the Orioles lost. It was a bit like last night with fewer runs. By the Orioles.
The Yankees beat the Orioles 9-4 at Oriole Park to take the first two games of this series. New York (74-39) has won 11 straight this season against the Orioles and 14 in a row at Camden Yards since July 11, 2018.
Tonight they hit six more homers to give them 11 in this series and 47 in 14 games versus O's...
Whether it's the baseballs or the ballpark or the pitching or the stacked lineups providing the opposition, the Orioles simply cannot contain the number of home runs surrendered this season.
They come in waves. They come in bunches. And a lot of them come from the Yankees, who hit six more tonight in a 9-4 victory before an announced crowd of 17,201 at Camden Yards that waited out a one-hour-and-12-minute delay before the first pitch.
The Orioles have surrendered 229 home runs this season,...
SAN FRANCISCO - It's been five years, and only a few of the faces remain the same, but that didn't diminish the smile on Asdrúbal Cabrera's face today as he looked around the visitors' clubhouse at Oracle Park and realized he was playing for the Nationals again.
"I played here in 2014, and I had fun here," the veteran infielder said. "Good group of guys. Now they have a new staff. I'm happy to be back and be part of the Nationals."
Released by the Rangers over the weekend and signed...
The Washington Nationals agreed to terms on a one-year contract with infielder Asdrúbal Cabrera and optioned infielder Adrián Sanchez to Double-A Harrisburg on Tuesday. Additionally, the Nationals designated right-handed pitcher Kyle Barraclough for assignment. Nationals President of Baseball of Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.
Cabrera, 33, joins the Nationals after hitting .235 with 15 doubles, 12 home runs, 51 RBI, 38 walks and 45 runs scored in 93 games...
